I came across this website which is a description of Fall River in 1890. The piece is credited to Nason and Varney's Massachusetts Gazeteer, 1890, pp. 298-302. Perhaps this link has appeared on the Forum before; in any case it is an interesting read.

Thanks, Doug, I've never read that before. It sounds as though there were a great many buildings made of granite or decorated with it at least.
