This just in:

"FALL RIVER -- Neighbors of Lizzie Borden’s last home in the Highlands have helped preserve a bit of her legacy, persuading the owner of Maplecroft to abandon plans to build a small house on the historic property.
Lizzie herself had persuaded the owners of a previous house at that spot to have the house moved.

Robert J. Dube, the owner of Maplecroft at 306 French St., withdrew his petition from the Zoning Board of Appeals on April 25 after facing strong opposition from abutters.

"He had no idea this was going to be controversial," said Dube’s attorney, Mark L. Levin of Levin & Levin on Rock Street. He withdrew "because he knows it is a source of contention.""

Thanks for the good news, Stef!

The ghost of Lizzie would not have liked it.

Wow, it still amazes me what people can accomplish when they band together.  Now, about that printing press building on the side of 92 Second Street.

I think we should also praise Mr. Dube for considering more than his own personal gain in this issue.  I hope he's able to get a good price for Maplecroft and build the sort of home he wants in a more appropriate location.

I'm sure all of us would like to see the Leary Press building located somewhere other than attached to 92 Second Street.  However, it has occurred to me that the printshop may be the reason the Borden house still exists.  The McGinn family was able to operate a business and live conveniently nearby, acting as stewards of the property for many years.  They're the major reason why we have the house to enjoy today.  (Hooray for Martha and her crew!)

I was speaking with tongue firmly planted in cheek, but, I think you are right.  If it wasn't for the printing press, the Borden home may have been torn down to make room for progress.  From looking at Stefani's video of the outside of the home, it seems like its a commercial district.  The Borden home replaced with a strip mall?  Yikes!

Great news for anybody who believes in preserving the past in order to benefit the future.

Saints preserve us...there IS hope in faith.  I was wondering how Mr. Dube was making out and now I know...thanks to all, if any, who write in opposition...there is strength in numbers.

Now all we have to do is find a wealthly old Uncle who can cough up a half-mill or so for a down payment on that house and we could all be land owners on the "Hill"....any takers??

It would be perfect spot for a sleepover...in fact many sleepovers.

HI!
Have you seen the house lately?  Can you describe what kind of shape it's in?

Last visit to the "Hill", Ms. Kat was in February just after a week of snow storms...the Mrs. got the "urge" to shop til she dropped and we went over to the mill outlets...of course most of the side streets hadn't been plowed so we had a tough time navigating.

The snow removal was so far behind that two of the really big outlet buildings were still closed...the one that was open, the one we went into, the store owners/workers weren't all that happy about being there...but hey, that's life, ain't it??

So anyway next week when I get over to the Spindle City for some talking up of any future Symposium...I will (just for you) take my daughters new digital cam and shot a few shots and post them.

Keep an eye out...
