I just booked my second stay at Lizzies !  Last time I had one night in Lizzie's room, this time I get 2 nights in the "guest room" !!  I am taking my niece for her high school graduation present.  If there are any of you who live in or near Fall River, I'd love to meet up with you.  Last trip, the FRHS was closed, so this time I AM going to see it.  I am so excited I can hardly stand it !  Any suggesstions on restaurants and other fun things in Fall River ?

Congratulations on the booking.

I haven't been there myself but you may want to try the Abbey Grille for food. That is in what was Lizzie's church, the Central Congregational on Rock Street.

Thank you for this idea Harry, and the picture is great ! I'll let you know how it goes.  Lyddie, I am thinking that grilled Abby would maybe be a old, tough, cold, piece of chopped beef ?...LOL.  I want to take in as much "Lizzie" stuff as I can.  I am not sure that 2 days and 2 nights is going to be nearly enough time.

I'll second the motion, Harry. It is so odd to see a church I attended some services in as a girl turned into a "grille". The building would surely provide some great ambiance!

Your time will never be long enough! Enjoy what you have there and don't try to cram too much in so that you have to rush from one thing to another. Better to take some time to absorb what you see and come back again for more.

You are so right Gramma !  When I stayed the first time, I tried to do too much in the 24 hours I was in Fall River.  This time should be much better.

Just limit it to taking in--not intake~! I think poor Abby would be much too flabby.  You don't want to spoil the visit with summer sickness.

Harry - Thanks for the gorgeous picture of the Abbey Grille.  I hadn't seen the inside of it before.  It's lovely!  I think Terence ate there during his FR trip and what he described sounded expensive.  I was a little surprised, since it's part of a culinary school.  But maybe the two parts are separate (I wouldn't see why, tho).  I might try it this year.  Especially after seeing that picture.  They say you can still stand in the exact spot where Lizzie's pew was.  I guess it is marked in some way.

You guys are reading my mind!

Stef and I were at The Abbey Grill Last night.  It is also the International Institute of Culinary Arts.
508-675-9305  office ph. #
They said it was the gymnasium.  The pew was in the church part, which was closed that night.  We were told that Lizzie's pew is in storage locked in the attic.  Then we heard later that it was possible all the pews which could be sold were sold to a buyer in San Fransisco, and it didn't sound like a recent deal.
Here is the post card they give out in their lobby.
I think, Augusta, your instincts are close to the real deal.

Another great picture !  Thanks for sharing it Kat.  I am excited about going to the Abbey Grille, even if it is pricey.  Like Gramma said, the ambiance will be great.  Maybe the Church part will be open and I can check out the pew situation...that would be fun.

Hi Kat.  My Name is Tracy and I am from Utah.  I am bringing my niece to FR as part of her graduation present.  We are going to take in as much as we can while we are there.  We will stay 2 nights in the guest room at Lizzies.  I want to make sure she gets to see the FRHS, the cemetary, and Maplecroft too.  Any idea if we can get INSIDE Maplecroft ?  What else should we see ?

Hi, I'm coming to Fall River soon as my daughter lives there. She has taken the tour at the Bed and Breakfast, though I understand that they are closed for the season. My daughter called them and they said that we might get a tour, no guarantees.  I hope that we can get in for the tour.  I don't want to stay there.  Think it would be too spooky to actually spend the night there, but it would be neat to see it.  She recently went to the cemetery, but as it was so big, she didn't find the gravesites.  How hard is it to find?  She said there were several Bordens buried there, which I can believe. She's only lived in Fall River about a year.  I've been interested in the Lizzie Borden case ever since seeing that movie with Elizabeth Montgomery. Thanks for any info you can give me. Kateylynn

Hi Kateylynn.  Staying at Lizzie's is SO worth it.  You would get over the scary part.  My first stay was in Lizzie's room last October, and now I am coming back for my second stay in April.  This time in the guest room !  Staying there is definitely a fun experience.  As for the cemetary, you can get a map when you stay at the house, or when you go in the gate, you just follow the arrows painted in the road that goes through the cemetary and that will take you right to THE Borden family plot.  Maybe someone at the FRHS could give you directions too.  STAY AT THE HOUSE !

Hey all, I stayed at Lizzie's last night and wrote about it in the Privy.  I forgot there was a thread about staying at Lizzie's. I have so much to say that I want to write another installment.  Should I do it here or in the Privy?

If I ever can manage to afford to I'd come to Fall River for a long vacation. The 2nd Street house, Maplecroft, the AJ Borden Building and the Abbey Grille would be all on my "must see" list.

BTW, I read in Frank Sperling's book (not sure of spelling) that in circa 1984 there was a bar called Lizzie's in the same neighbourhood as the Borden house. Is that true? If so, and if it's still standing and in business that might be interesting to visit although I don't drink.

Mark,  Although I am a newbie here and to studying the Borden murder case, it was my first trip to Fall River that took an interest and made it passion.  The house, the Borden building, Maplecroft, and the cemetary made my first trip very exciting.  I'm sure my second trip will be as fun.  Save your pennies...it is SO worth it.

Thanks for the info on the cemetery. My daughter said she remembers seeing the arrows, so we should be able to find the gravesites. I wish that the Historical Society was open in March, but we are going back there in April to help my daughter move back to Missouri, where we live.  Fall River has not been good to them, except for the birth of a very lovely baby boy, so they are moving back here. Her husband is from Massachusetts. She has been very interested in Lizzie since moving there, and I believe that she has ordered a video from one of the members on the forum. I am anxious to see some of Lizzie's old "haunts."  No pun intended.  My daughter said that there was a church close to the Borden house.  Is that the church that she once attended, which I understand is now called Abby's Grille?  I hope to see Maplecroft, too.  My daughter wasn't sure where that was, but I imagine we can find it. Thanks for any information you can pass on. Your comments are fascinating.  Kateylynn

There is a church a stone's throw from #92, but that is Saint Mary's Cathedral, a Catholic Church.
That was not the Borden's church and it's odd, but I don't think we even know if that was Bridget's Church?

The Abbey Grill is not in the Central Congregational Church, but in part of it's complex, and is right on the street.
Now that I think about it, it might be named ABBEY, as in Monastery, cloister, church.
It's at 100 Rock Street, the same street that the FRHS is located.
Beware of one way streets!
We passed it quickly, but did have one of those rare chances of turning right and "going around the block", which chance does not come often, in Fall River.

E Radin mentions this (obliquely?) in his book. Aside from the class prejudices, there was also the Presbyterian / Catholic conflicts.

Which airport are you flying to?

It's a toss up between Boston and Providence.  Providence would be easier, but there is a red-eye into Boston, which would put us there early on the morning of April 29th instead of the regular flight which would put us there in the early evening.  It would be like having almost an extra day to run around looking at Lizzie things...a good idea I think.

We chose Boston over Providence because Providence as destination wanted a change of planes!
It was $229 from Orlando with about $40 tacked on for some kind of tax= $260, approx.
It was Delta's new fleet, "Song".  There is no first class and the 757 holds 199 people.  They have sandwiches and sodas but you pay for the food.
I brought 2 PB&J sandwiches, Tostitoes, Oreos and  bottled water.
Coffee is free.
They had TV's on the return flight!  That was great!  I watched a family with crew put in a nice Backyard for an old man whose offspring liked to congregate in his patio.

We parked in "SAtellite" parking and took the shuttle to the airport proper from Orlando, and it was $7 a day.  If you get a rental, their shuttle will pick you up and take you out of Logan to their offices and give you a map out of town.  You are supposed to tip the rental-car shuttle guy.  He will lift your bags for you.
At Logan, leaving, they want your shoes off.  If you haven't flown in a while, be dressed as if you were going to the doctor- you know clean everything and clean socks- no holes!
They always wannt your ID so if you have a good secure pocket you can keep it handy.
Allow 2 FULL hours from the parking lot at your airport to your loading gate, where you wait for your plane.

OK...I will be flying in to Providence.  Yes, the plane change part is no fun as they require one coming from Salt Lake City too, but I ended up finding a red-eye in to  Providence, which was about a $100+ bucks cheaper each for my niece and I...so I took it.  We will also stay two nights up near Boston, in Braintree.  I am SOOO excited.  Thanks for the airport advice Kat...stuff like that is always good to know.   Tracy...

When we went to England we wished someone had written just a simple how-to guide to everything.

I didn't take off my boots at Logan.  The security lady and I almost had a bet going.  I told her my boots had recently been re-shod and I knew there was glue and not nails/tacks.  She bet me I'd ring the bell and have to remove them anyway.  i passed thru and she said she was surprised!
