In my area (Washington DC), there was a Lizzie Borden question on "Jeopardy" tonight.  The category was "1890s," and the question was (not a direct quote): "What was Lizzie Borden's relationship to the woman she was acquitted of killing on August 4, 1892?"  I believe only two contestants tried to answer.  One said, "Stepmother," and the other said, "Mother."  The correct answer, of course, was "Stepdaughter."  (This time at least the question was correct.)

Unbelievable.  My childlike faith in "Jeopardy" is henceforth shattered.

Lizzie Borden took an axe
& gave her step-daughter 40 whacks!

Huh?  I don't understand????  Faith shattered?  Why?  The last time I can recall that "Jeopardy" had a question about Lizzie, the answer was something like, "City in which Lizzie Borden was tried for the murders of her father and stepmother."  According to "Jeopardy," the correct answer was "Fall River, MA."  (They got a few lumps for that one.)

It's been years since I watched "Jeopardy", tho I grew up watching it.  I always thought it was above reproach.

Oh well...live & learn.

You know, in all the things I have read on this case I never heard Lizzie referred to as the stepdaughter.  She is of course, and Emma as well.

I think that question would have thrown me for a second or two because of that.

Actually the correct answer is "What is a stepdaughter?"  The "answer" must be in the form of a question.    Just me being a wise guy.

Oops!  I hate using this expression but, alas...my "blonde" is showing!

Thanks for being a wise guy, Harry; it made me re-read.  I misunderstood Edisto's post.

"Caplain, Neilson. 'Lizbits.' Lizzie Borden Quarterly VII.3 (July 2000): 5, 16-18.
Article covers several topics in this column, including the sights and sounds of Fall River past and present, the incorrect Lizzie Borden question on Jeopardy, Inspector Medley's later fame, speculations on the reasons why Lizzie remained unmarried, a biographical sketch on David Kent (author of Forty Whacks), and a description of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Weekly of 29 June 1893 and its cover sketch of Lawyer Robinson addressing the Court before the acquittal."

--On page 16 there is a photo of Alex Trebek and Jeannine Bertolet, Nov. 7, 1990.  I lately was wondering in which issue I could find that picture, so this topic led me right to it!

Another Jeopardy question on Lizzie was cited in the Summer, 1994 issue of the LBQ, page 5:

"On a recent episode of "Jeopardy" host Alex Trebek cited: "She was accused of killing her father and stepmother in the city of Fall River, Massachusetts in 1892."  Of course the answer - in the form of a question: "Who was Lizzie Borden?"  None of the three contestants answered correctly."
