Q.  Was that quite a frequent thing, for her [Lizzie] to visit you?
A.  She has done so more this Summer, because she has not had quite so much outside work, but we have always visited, been friends.

Q.  How long ago was the last time she [Lizzie] said anything about it?
A.  I think last Winter sometime. I have not seen her at the house for, I might say all Summer, and I have inquired of my wife how it was that Lizzie had not been down. Emma has always come. And the reply I would get from her was that Lizzie was into everything, that is, the works in the church, and her time was occupied; that is what I would get from her.

--Was Lizzie ignoring her Harrington relatives that summer, and Lurana was hiding the fact from Hiram?

Q.  Did you stop to eat the pears?
A.  I think I was eating one when I went to the door.
Q.  Tell me please, as near as you can, who you saw there that you can name, when you got into the house?
A.  Why, the first two that were right together, were a man named Sawyer, and this servant girl, Bridget something.

Q.  Did you notice whether Mr. Morse was eating a pear or not, or eating anything?
A.  No Sir he was not when he spoke to me, at that time.

As strange as JVM's behavior has always sounded, this makes it sound even more peculiar.  People standing around the house...something obviously wrong inside...he goes back to the pear trees and picks up a few off the ground...he's munching one as he approaches the door.  D'you suppose he thought a little oral gratification was in order?   Or was it simply that he thought dinner might be late (or nonexistent) that day?

Obviously, JVM needed time to figure out the story that they needed to tell the police. "Who in God's name did this happen?" THAT tells me it was a suprise to everyone.

Uncle John merely carried a personal message and set up the meeting that was agreeable to both Andy and Wm S Borden (after concocting a note to draw Abby away). BUT he could now be charged with something.

Again, AR Brown provides the solution.

Or, if that theory doesn't ring your bell...

If Morse (innocent) learned of Andrew's death from Bowen in a phone call or a quick encounter as they passed one another over at the relative's house, no wonder he came home reeking of alibi and was not too keen on noticing a crowd, nor on entering the house, where there would now most assuredly be NO lunch - or supper, or whatever they called it, then.
