There are moments when the "small world" aspects of this case simply astound me. Andrew may have had his troubles with Hiram, but this fact apparently did not tar every Harrington in town.

Trial:
Page 558

Q. Yes. And you discovered Mr. Borden's body there?
A. Yes, sir; on a sofa which rested on the north side of the house was the form of a man partially covered with a sheet, going from the head, the west end of the lounge, down a little below the knees. Below that black pants and a pair of laced shoes.
Q. Did you do anything, or simply see the body covered with the sheet?
A. I raised the sheet from the face and looked at it.
Q. From the appearance could you recognize the person who was there?
A. I could not, sir.
Q. You had known Mr. Borden?
A. Yes, sir.
Q. How long?
A. Well, I had known Mr. Borden for twenty or twenty-five years. I had worked for him for over three years at one time.

Interesting too, is the possibility that Phil Harrington & Lizzie might have been at least casual acquaintances as children. It's almost impossible to even speculate now, since by the end of the trial year, Phil Harrington himself would be dead. But it's nevertheless interesting.

Probably not Doug65oh.  Harrington was born in April of 1859 which made him a almost a year older than Lizzie but being Irish would not have been acceptable to at least Andrew.  In addition not having wealth would have been strikes 2 and 3 and 4 and more to Lizzie.

Thought I read somewhere that the Bordens did not have a relationship or interaction with the Kelly's next door.

"Passing acquaintance" is actually a better phrase for what I had in mind, nothing much beyond knowing who she was.

"Duniho, Terence. 'Friends From Boyhood: A Police Officer and an Embezzler.' Lizzie Borden Quarterly VIII.3 (July 2001): 7, 17-20.
Duniho follows the trail of Joseph W. Carpenter, Jr., an employee of Andrew J. Borden who had embezzled $6,700 from Borden & Almy as a possible suspect in the murder of Andrew and Abby Borden."

In "All Things Swift", Terence says Lizzie and Harrington (the police officer mentioned above) went to the high school together.
Tho he was a year older, and she dropped out, it might be possible they shared one year?

Philip Harrington also lived in Lizzie's neighborhood for awhile; I believe he was the previous occupant of the house on Borden St. where Alice Russell lived at the time of the murders.

I think it entirely possible that Phil and Lizzie at least knew who the other was when they were younger.
