It flourished for about 50 years. Isn't that about the same time span for other localized industries? There are other cities where the big industry collapsed and the town went downhill.
Not the fires in 1928, after the depression. I remember hearing about something similar 30 years ago in another town. After the flood, a number of businesses burned down. "They had fire insurance, but no flood insurance" was the comment.

The problem in Fall River was they didn't want to face it. They kept trying to run on the old reputation rather than finding new and better things to do.
