Lawyers advise defendants not to take the stand unless to contradict an eyewitness (F. Lee Bailey's "Defense Never Rests"?). The Prosecution is supposed to PROVE guilt, not depend on defendant's testimony.
You do know that someone who is not a good speaker can get themselves into trouble against a skilled lawyer?
