Today marks the 125th anniversary of the birth of Grace Coolidge, another prominent woman from New England, who served as both First Lady of Massachusetts (1919-1920) and First Lady of the United States (1923-1929). She was born Grace Anna Goodhue in Burlington, Vermont, on January 3, 1879. Grace Goodhue graduated from the University of Vermont in 1902 and moved to Northampton, Massachusetts, where she became a teacher at the Clarke School for the Deaf. In Northampton Grace met Calvin Coolidge, a local lawyer and aspiring politician, and they were married in 1905. Calvin Coolidge served as Governor of Massachusetts 1919-1920; as Vice President of the United States 1921-1923; and as President of the United States 1923-1929.

Grace Coolidge was outgoing and well-liked. Among the younger of the First Ladies (only 44 in 1923) she was a popular figure in both Washington, D.C., and in her adopted hometown of Northampton. In his autobiography Calvin Coolidge wrote of his wife, "We thought we were made for each other. For almost a quarter of a century she has borne with my infirmities, and I have rejoiced in her graces." She survived her husband by twenty-four years and died in Northampton on July 8, 1957. Long after her death Grace Coolidge was remembered by an acquaintance as friendly "with a great manner about her. Mrs. Coolidge was a lovely person. She was revered... She was a gracious person with a lot of presence."

That's really interesting.
And Grace was 7 years younger than her husband.
Abby was about 6 years younger than Andrew.
