A murder in Fall River. Local girl found haning from a tree. (Shades of Billy Borden). She had a reputation of being a shop lifter. The accused was found not guilty. Hey, where have we heard all this before?

Would you believe I'm in the process fo reading a book about this case right now?  However, it didn't take place in 1878; it occurred in 1832, long before Lizzie was even born.  (I think the 1878 reference is to another book about the case that was published in 1878.)  It's quite fascinating, because many of the surnames that crop up in this case are the same ones we're familiar with in the Borden case.  The body was found on the farm of a Durfee family, and Sarah Cornell's physician was named Wilbur (same as one of the jurors).  There are references to an earlier work by someone named Bowen, and several Bordens figure in the case.  This time, however, they're on the right side of the law!  The book, which I bought off eBay - and very cheaply, too, is called "Fall River Outrage/Life, Murder and Justice in Early Industrial New England."  It's by David Richard Kasserman (1986).  I've never seen a copy for sale before, but it might be available through interlibrary loan.  It's very well researched but does have the somewhat dry feel of a dissertation.  Sarah Cornell was a factory girl, but I'm struck by the eloquence of the letters she wrote.  She was amazingly literate.  A great read but only peripherally related to the Borden case (at best).

An excellent website Harry...I found this one this shows Lizzie being a decendant of Thomas Cornell...I guess the Cornell's and the Borden's are no strangers to death and family destruction.
