Well this is certainly a milestone.  Allow me the moment to make an informal introduction of myself.  My name is Bob Cook whence the handle except that "848" denotes the labor union number to which I belong as opposed as to my birth month/year.  I am a "classic" boomer having been born in September 1951.  I work as a career Firefighter for the City of Attleboro.  From the early 1970's when I moved here from the Midwest (somewhat like John V. Morse I was born and raised in Illinois, he once lived there) though not from Iowa.  I am a graduate student at Framingham State College working on a Masters in Public Administration.  Married in 1975 to a local woman who operates a private pre-school.  We have three adult children two of whom are in their 3rd year of college (they are twins, boy & girl) and our youngest is a high school senior.  We are the "typical" middle class family with all the mortgages and headaches .  On Friday March 22nd my daughter and I will be spending the night at the Lizzie Borden B & B as her 21st birthday wish.  We are looking forward to the stay like you can not believe.  We this is my story hope others "get aquainted".  Thanks for allowing me to be a part of the forum.  Bob

Hello, I am Tina. I haven't been around much since some stressful things have been happening in my household, but am still a member and lurker, BTW, hi Kat, I'm still here! I have adored Lizzie since a young age. Done reports on her, etc. I am glad there is a place like this to debate the unanswered questions. If nothing else to make you think.
I am a mother to three beautiful young boys. Wife to an understanding husband, who takes my strange, or eccentric ways and wouldn't do a thing to change me.

I have an update. We are now up to 45 members!!!!!

At least two a day for the past week, almost.

While I am here, a little about me!

I am an author and educator---at least that is how I would describe myself this week. I live in Orlando and love it here, although I am surprised by that fact. I always wanted to live in California. But I was born and raised right here (a true native) and went to grad school at Penn State. I think Joe Paterno is the greatest coach in the history of college football and hope to live to see the Nitany Lions get another national championship.

I have been into Lizzie since around 1974 when my dad (this is how Kat and I figured it) read Sullivan and passed the book around for us to comment on. We used to read true crime and discuss it at the dinner table.

I've read everything about Ted Bundy and Jack the Ripper and love books by FBI profilers, especially John Douglas. I read mostly non-fiction and write reviews of young adult literature for VOYA (Voice of Youth Advocates). My second book was published in 2000 and is 900 page annotated and comprehensive bibliography of Arthur Miller.

I teach acting, directing, humanities, history of film, theatre history, and screenwriting. And I love it!!

I am also the webmaster (what a great word!) of the lizzie andrew borden website. Oh, and best of all, Kat is my sister!!

Wecome all!

I am wearing Eddie Baur jeans and a T shirt with Toshiro Mifune on it (there are several slashes in the T shirt)

Bob, Kat would never mean that! She thinks exactly the opposite to how you read her message. I am speaking for her here because I know she won't read this message from you until around 8 tonight and I didn't want you to feel all day like you were put down. On the contrary, she and I appreciate your comments and the inclusion of who you are on your profile and in your posts!

I think she meant that you had introduced yourself in your eariler posts and wishes it were cut and pasted here to add to these introductions.

My real name is Glen Carlson, but somewhere a long, long time ago I got labled "JoJo".  Now who would want THAT to stick.  Anyhow, I work for the State of Michigan as a bureaucrat with the welfare dep't that is called the Family Independence Agency.  I love history, esp. the Civil War and later Victorian crap, like the Boer War.  Got my BA from U of Minnesota and MS from (gloat) Hah-vahd.  I live in Ironwood, Michigan where it is so far away from anything that the only way to purchase anything is via internet.  There is close to 8 feet of snow in our backyard.
My wife & I grew up here, then went to the World.  Lived in Minneapolis area, Boston, Atlanta, and moved away from all the traffic back home to Ironwood about 10 years ago.
I can retire in 582 days at age 65 plus 2 months!  Soc. Sec., here I come!
We have kids in the Boston area, so wife & I are visiting there in August.  We plan to go to Fall River.  I'll be taking pix of various and sundry things for y'all.  Got a list from Stef. If there is anything that any of you need from F.R., let me know.

Sorry: I guess I did misunderstand, we Virgos are reknown for taking the word literally.  Since joining this forum last month I have truly enjoyed the intellect that some many share.  Like everyone else I have been a fan of the Borden case since I heard of it way back in my childhood days in Illinois.  The childs rhyme is known of course Internationally.  I have just finished ready Victoria Lincoln's book which makes four in the past four weeks.  All this in preparation for next weeks visit to the B & B.  I will have some tales to post after that.  Thanks for the clarification and thanks for the warm welcome.

Hello all.  I'm an occasional poster, & shameless lurker from Canada.  38 yrs young.  I'm obsessive about all things Victorian & interested in the Lizzie case since the mid 70s, having been introduced by my true crime obsessed British parents.  I'm a freelance writer, editor & bookkeeper.  Have just released my 1st novel, set partially in the era of 1899-1912.

Oh, what a great opportunity to plug my book

That was touching and generous of you BobCook to rethink your first impression as to what I wrote.  Thank you, humbly.
As Stef said, I don't get on here till late, so I am glad you accepted her explanation as to my intentions.
I had almost asked her to gather up all your fascinating biographical info you've been sharing on other threads, to put in this one place, in case anyone may have missed your interesting exploits.  Those threads disappear so soon, it would have been a shame for others to miss them...  then I thought maybe you could cut'npaste them all on this thread...but it was wishful thinking.  I loved reading about your life and experiences.
I'm also just learning Cut'n paste, and that was on my mind.  Also I had missed all of MARCH 7th posts because of a technical glitch, and so recently knew how easy it was to get left behind--those things disappear in 24 hours!
Pretty soon, after people aren't so tired of reading this from me to you, I'll write about myself.--kat

Is Pennsylvania considered New England?
Born there July, 1951, and two older brothers born there also.
Lived in Baltimore, Fort Worth, Winter Park, Fla.,
where my only sister was born, then Sacramento, then Cocoa Beach, where our youngest brother was born--thus making the last 2out of five, NATIVES.  Then moved back to Sacramento, then back to Florida, where I got to go to 9-13 grades without moving anywhere.  A year in Jr. college, then off to Boston for 3 years..moving around was, by then, in my blood.  I once figured I had lived in 17 differnt places (houses, apt.s or cities)by the time I was 30.  Went a year to UMASS, DOWNTOWN, before they opened a REAL campus.  Then the Art Institute of Boston for "a While".  Actually until I got tired of riding my bike there from the Hill with all my supplies..a semester.  Worked there in a haunted movie theatre and as a Nanny on Beacon Hill.
I have ALSO figured (I have insomnia at times) that as a READER, I have read 6,000 books and at least 3,000 magazines in 35 years, not including text-books or cereal boxes.
I spent the 70's having a BLAST, and shooting pool (oh and working...dental assistant, apartment rental agent, bar-keep) and swimming all the spare time.
The 80's were when I hit the brick-wall of Life...smack head-on.
The first 1/2 I traveled a LOT, mostly with my sister:  California, England, Scotland.  Have crossed the country 12 times by car.
Then our father had a long illness and I was his primary care-giver...then he died.  Then our mother had 2 strokes and I was her primary care-giver, in the home, for 10 years.  These last 12 years of life and death have shaped me in unique ways.  Time for aloness..time for contemplation, time to grieve..time to stop and philosophize.
Have been living on inheritence, time for a JOB!  Have 7 cats that became my responsibilty after our mother died, need supporting.
...KARMA...

We've been reading true-crime at our house since the Moors Murders, mid-60's..then Manson, then Lizzie Borden, then Jack-the-R.  Great to have 4 adults discussing this stuff over the dinner table....we were lucky our folks would discuss ANYTHING!
A Rocket Scientist and a double-Life-Master Duplicate Bridge Player...and Stef and me.

Kat:  now that IS a bio...and a half.  But sadly enough Pennsylvania is not one of the six New England states.  New Yorkers in particular those along the N.E. border lay claim to being New Englanders except in matters of baseball, football, and hockey.  Though I myself am not a "native" of Massachusetts I have lived here since 1970, aged 18 at the time, also born in 1951, I am by osmosis a New Englander.  Of course my wife is a native of Massachusetts as are our three children.  Being a long term transplant I have a philosophy that states quite simply that if one wishes to akin themselves to a certain geographical area or section of our nation then that person most certainly may be considered, albeit to oneself, a native of that land.  Woweeie....that was a download of the brain...I didn't know I had in me.  So Kat if you wish to be an honorary "native" of New England by virtue of your knowledge and expertise of New England and one of its most famous ladies...let it be so proclaimed that from this day forth you shall be...one of us!!  (I just had a flashback of the Wizard giving someone a testimonial)...yikes..BC

Yes, Kat ... not to sound like my dreaded old geography teacher (whom I always considered 'world's dullest biped' until my world-view widened), but New England is comprised of Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.  What's more, we born and bred New Englanders are reputed to be, among other things, a very clannish brood.  However, like Bob, I believe your strong identification with N.E. -- let alone your very difficult life transitions in the past years -- fully entitles you to feel part of the fold.  Meet us every Sunday morning for hymn-singing and teaching immigrant kids at the Congregational Church.  Sorry, but the Borden pew is off-limits even to we New Englanders.

Well, now I know.  Somehow I thought PA's gotta be New England...
Our mother's side of the family were Penn. Dutch Methodists, pretty darn CLOse...and our first ancestor over was a Quaker, (1745?)  I DO have an affinity for Mass., tho....
But sorry, guys, I love the South!  I guess I'm considered a cosmopolitan amalgamation.

Hi everyone,

I just joined last week and I've been reading your site for over a month now.  You give me lots to consider about the Bordens.

I grew up in Bridgewater, MA pretty close to FR, but not close enough.  I have had an interest in Lizzie since I first heard of the chant 40 whacks.  Started reading any and all books and articles about her life and then I attended a talk about Lizzie at my local library.  Hooked since that fateful night.

I've worked at Bridgewater State College as a secretary since 1978 and before had different jobs and one at Taunton State Hospital that I mentioned in one posting.

I currently reside in Taunton quite close to the river itself and of course right down the road from Fall River.  I make many trips thru FR to get Newport in the summer (beaches) and I always gaze out the window and think of Lizzie.  I've been by 92 Second Street and have looked into the yard, but never entered the house.  I plan on doing that soon.  When I cruise down route 138 toward FR, I think of Andy owning all that property on the banks of the Taunton River.  That river is massive when you get to Mount Hope Bay.

Everyone who contributes to this forum, seems to have all their facts annotated and the bibliography right at their finger tips!!!  I just started to reread Arnold Brown's book and I am keeping notes just to keep in sync with all of you. I've read the inquest literature on the web and I see many of you are reading the actual trial transcripts.  Where do I get a copy of the trial transcripts?  I'm dying to read that!!  Anyway, anyway, keep reading, writing, and thinking, I'll contribute when I have some facts to share.  Thanks for letting me join.

Another coincidence:

The Borden Coat of Arms is a shield atop of which is a LION RAMPANT wielding a BATTLE AXE in it's right paw.

Lizzie is a Cusp of LEO (the lion), and a hatchet (ax) certainly was WIELDED on the Bordens.

What difference would it make if the wife is aboard, that it had to be signalled on a flag?  Just wondering...Just WHAT were those *jolly rogers* getting up to when she WASN'T?

This coat of arms goes back farther than that, probably a war-axe.

Hi everyone, I'm a newbie here, have pity.  I'm a thirty-something artist from San Diego, though originally I am an East coast girl.  New Jersey to be precise.  I just love the Victorian era and all that came with it, architecture, art, clothing, etc. and I have been a rabid Bordenite since I was 10!

I have yet to visit the LAB B&B yet, when I lived on the east coast it was still a private residence.  And what makes it even more ghoulishly fun is the idea that it is haunted!  Haunted houses and ghosts are another of my fav things to study.  I guess my parents warped me well?

Thanks, BobCook848!  If and when I go back east I will try!  I do have a grandfather who lives 5 minutes out of Boston, I can also visit him whilst there.

Can I tell you what happened at MY house last night, speaking of coincidences (which is my middle name!)...?

I called my 86 year old neighbor and she told me (again) how many medications she takes daily.
I said "yea but you have an iron stomach!"
She agreed.
Then I said "you could eat B-B-Q chicken and fresh strawberries at the SAME meal!"
She went quiet for a sec. (which is a Miracle!)
Then she said "that's exactly what I had for dinner!"

I'd have to get the exact address from my mom, I haven't been to see him in years.  But, I'm sure he would love to see me.

Oh, I've got a MILLIOn of 'em....

Susan, I haven't had a grandfather since c. 1977.
It might be good to see one before they reach their expiration date!

I haven't had a grandparent since 1962...they all passed on at very young ages...both my mum and pop are gone...gezzz...things don't look too good for me.

But what am I worried about?  I'm a strong Virgo..I'll survive...if it's the last thing I do!

Yea, I know.  I'm not civilized when it comes to technology.
Stef's the one who could fix that tho...

I did also get to know my great-grandmother, she passed away in 1990 at the age of 95.  All I have left at this point is one grandmother and one grandfather, but, I do keep in touch with them, phone calls, letters, etc.

And Kat didn't scare me, I just was wondering what was up?

Oh, and BTW, I did ask my greatgrandmother about Lizzie Borden, if she remembered hearing about her when she was a little girl, but, it never really entered her realm.  *sigh*

See my profile...click on that little white face-icon that is in sillouette, to the right of my posts!

I asked my 86 year old neighbor about Lizzie (she grew up in D.C. and Maryland--her sister was a judge) but she ABHORS the topic of muder and violence and won't discuss it!  If only she knew she gets mentioned on here from time to time!

My 84 year-old "aunt" in Ohio (used to be from Muncie) says she remembers,"back when" that it was all anyone talked about at times.  But nothing specific.

She also remembers Privy's and outhouses as late as the 30's, and using SPIEGLE catalogue pages preferrably over SEARS...

While Harry and bobcookbobcook were having their HUGE coincidence over on the Canadian Newspaper Story Topic, Augusta and I were having our OWN!
She wanted a glimpse of a "Nance O'Neil" signature *real quick*, to compare to the E-Bay item, whilst I was posting Attachments of photo's of Miss O'Neil, where one does seem to proffer an autograph!  And I didn't even notice it...Augusta did...and right when she wanted it!!!

Anyone else compared the signatures?

It's on the first photo attached...

My deceased grandmother did skip rope to "Lizzie Borden took an axe, etc, etc."  She was born and raised in Boston, pronounced Bahstahn.  She was really funny, she was brought up with the whole idea that a lady only appeared in the newspapers 3 times in her life, the day she is born, the day she marries, and the day she dies.  And certainly never for being on trial for murder!  She also had a little thing about how a lady never gives her true age but twice in her lifetime, the day she is born and the day she dies!  Gram never did learn how to drive so I guess she forgot about when you go to motor vehicles to get your license?
