Ran across this site which seems to indicate Lizzie owned property in New Bedford adjacent or near to 126 Dartmouth St.

The 3rd article down in this Feb. 1999 classified ad cites "land now or formerly of Lizzie A. Borden to other land now or formerly of said Borden"

I can find no mention of it in Rebello (Appendix C) unless I overlooked it. She certainly was an accumulator or property.

I keep on thinking of the scene in "Gone With The Wind" where the father tells Scarlett (I paraphrase) "land is the only thing".  I wonder if Lizzie read the book.

This property is just north of South Dartmouth where Uncle Morse lived with the Davis family. Very curious.

I can't read that description and come up with a parcel. It is greek to me. Can anyone give me a clearer reading. Is it saying that the property for sale is adjacent to a property formerly owned by Lizzie? Curious.

I don't think it is explainable without knowing where the individual parcels of land that are referred to were. Even then it would be very hard to follow. We'd need a surveyor. Where's Thomas Kieran when you need him.

It is interesting that she owned land there though. I wonder what the story behind the ownership was.

A mystery that only Rebello could unravel!

Since the sale was held "...on the premises at 126 Dartmouth Street, New Bedford, Massachusetts", it looks to me that Lizzie owned the property on the south boundary of the property on Dartmouth St. in New Bedford.  Doesn't say how much the property is being auctioned for, only that $5,000 of the auctioned price "...will be required to be paid in cash, bank or certified check by the purchaser at the time and place of sale; balance due within thirty (30) days as stated in terms announced at the sale."

If this sale is 1999, could it be a different Lizzie A. Borden?
Anybody got a New Bedford phone book for that year?

Well, I guess nobody has a phone book...

I've recently read that Andrew had farms at Somerset...is this a misprint, or does anybody know this?

Lizzie couldn't have read Gone With The Wind, Lizzie died in l927, Gone with the Wind was published in the late l930's.

Thanks Laurie, I didn't know that.

Just checked, it was published in 1936.

She does have a lot of Scarlett's traits though.

Kat: yes, Andrew had farms in Somerset. He had a Portugese laborer and his wife living at one, one of the Portugese who were suspected of the murders.

I know the reference in Porter, and tried to confirm it with another source--sorry I wasn't clear----
After you wrote, Dave, I did think to check the "Land Transactions" Records in Rebello, but there are none for Somerset, only tons for Swansea. Today found a notation in Rebello, pg.50:

...that Porter referred to Andrew's farms as being in Somerset, (with the attendant Portuguese employee), but that "no land transactions were found At the Registry of Deeds in Fall River to document any Borden property in Somerset, Mass...."
Thanks anyway,
I guess there were no farms at Somerset.

I just found a spurious reference in an hoax article, by McHenry, that was printed in the Boston Globe, and re-printed in the Evening Standard , Oct.10, 1892(see Privy):
that a piece of paper was found in Andrew's wallet that was like a codicle to *his will* that bequeathed "the farm in Somerset" to Mrs Whitehead.
About the only thing true in the above reference is the person of *Mrs. Whitehead*.
