Rhonda, why did you put the item for sale so soon, before I had a chance to get back with you? Also, my email to you bounced back to me as your queue is full.

Also, why end the auction early?

Not an answer to your question, unfortunately, Stef, but methinks somebody is having a little fun with us!  Nan?  I too have one of those little memory books with messages written to someone named Lizzie in the 1890s, but I can easily tell this Lizzie lived in Ohio and wasn't Lizzie Borden.  There are other familiar names in my book, including an "Emma."

This is getting confusing.  It was originally listed under another URL and then the auction was terminated.

It looks like she posted it for sale, cancelled the sale and then started another. This one has a reserve of 100. The other one was starting at 1 buck. Me thinks she decided to do it higher. You can't change the price once you have started a sale, only the written details. SO maybe she was worried she would not make any money with the one dollar start?

anyway, it is interesting, to say the least. I am as well confused why everything is moving so quickly. Why the need to sell so fast without authentication? Seems to me that if the thing is what it might be you could end up selling it for a whole lot more than what you can get at an auction site. Seems to me the FRHS might want something like this, even if it were not real, as a sort of curiosity piece.

Oh, well. It is over my price range now. I hope whoever gets it has fun.

Doubly confusing...I just looked at the item (using the new URL) and the item didn't have a $100 reserve, AND it still started at $1.00.  It was up to $103.50, however.  I wanted to look at the bids, to see who was bidding on it.  (I have my suspicions.)  However, the whole section of the listing that has "bid history," and the link to send email to the seller, is missing!  I've never seen that before.  Is this maybe a private auction now, with the bidders' names not to be publicized?  eBay allows that, but there's usually a "Private Auction" notation on it.  Also, I can't imagine their not allowing bidders to contact the seller!  Very odd indeed!

That happened on my view as well Edisto.  I just clicked to the right of the number of bids (where it should appear) and voila it came up.

Thanks for the tip, Harry!  Yes indeed, all of the info can be brought up by clicking all around the screen, inconvenient as that is.  I suggest that anyone who's even considering bidding on this item take a look at the seller's feedback.  It's the worst I've seen on eBay!  The seller claims to be suffering from grand mal epilepsy.  Since I have a close relative with that illness, I do understand that there are degrees of it, and that some people suffer frequent seizures that are debilitating.  However, I can't imagine that anyone trying to make a living selling on eBay wouldn't try to find an assistant who could make sure things are kept up to date and that the necessary follow-up is done.  This person's payment terms are pretty scary too.  Just wanted to make you aware!

I am not used to cruising E-Bay so a lot of it is Greek to me.
But as an *investigator* I did notice something that may be odd about the feedback on this seller...

The list comprises 5 (FIVE) feedbacks in a row, all with different Positive comments, but all posted by the same person just minutes apart on the same day!  Is this usual, legal, etc.?

You can only post feedback on somebody on ebay if you are a seller or a buyer. So what you saw was 5 feedbacks for 5 different transactions. What you need to look for are the negatives and the comments.

If you look to the right of the feedback there is an item number. If it is highlighted, meaning if the auction is less than 30 days since it ended, you can click on the number and see what the person bought.

It is the way a buyer can foresee possible problems with a seller.

I notice all those positive feedbacks from the same person are feedback obtained when this seller bought several "Buy It Now" items from the same person.  (The letter "B" in the right column indicates the subject of the feedback was the buyer in this case.)  The "something" was several pieces of very splashy costume jewelry.  I've looked at that person's items, because they look like replicas of the sort of jewelry people wore in the 19th Century and would be good to wear with costumes from that era.

Wow, I'm learning a lot about what to look for!

I looked at one set of jewelry and it looked like somthing Mrs. Astor would wear on an ocean liner to dinner.

I absolutely hate the red background on the sale of this item on ebay. It hurts my eyes.

There seems to be a bidding war between angelstuff and houseoffritz.

Curiouser and curiouser.

When I clicked on "Angelstuff", it seems it's Possible her name is Alice Harris and she sells plates.

She has feedback from redsrelics884, 4/8.

Offhand it looks like the book is bogus.  Just my opinion.  Many things appear to give it away.  Without authentication, how can this seller say it's Lizzie's autograph and book?  She says she doesn't know if it's real or not - so why not get it authenticated if her story is true?  I find the item laughable.

I'm with you Auggy...I think that entire deal is modern day work.

The writing doesn't appear as scriptic or cursive as other 19th Century handwritings I have seen.

Yes, Bobcookbobcook, some of the writing was awfully roundish.  I also thought the pencil drawing looked modern.  If you click on the third Nance O'Neil photo attachment Kat posted in her first post on the Nance website thread, there is a clear autograph of Nance on the bottom of her picture.  It does not match the signature on one of those pages at least.

13 hours left of sale?
Still 2 bidders.
Reserve met.
Fritz and Angel...

It sure stumps me how the listing can proclaim "autograph."
Technically any signature is an autograph, right?  So this is not necessarily proclaiming it as "Lizzie's Autograph"?  Is that how it's done, or am I learning the WRONG rules?

Good morning Kat:

The word "autograph" is from the Latin and mean "written with one's own hand." An autograph of Lizzie Borden, must be written by Lizzie Borden.
The offer in eBay has several discrepancies.

Studying the listing carefully, I'm reminded of that saying, "If it looks too good to be true, it probably is."  We have all these coincidences: names "Lizzie/Lizzy" and "Mother" Abby (or is it Abbie?); the "Nan" person who's probably supposed to be Nance O'Neil, but who appears in Lizzie's life 'way too early; the sketch of a water scene with pansies (Lizzie's supposedly favorite flower), etc., etc., etc.  And of course that story about the seller's having actually chucked the item until "someone" pointed out that it could be related to THAT Lizzie Borden.  Even the fact that it was supposedly found with items pertaining to silent films.  We know Nance O'Neil appeared in silent films, don't we?
