I thought I'd found a KNOWLTON PAPERS for sale at Amazon and it turned out to be a "PERSON WAITING IN LINE FOR ONE"!

So once a thread is started, can't *back out* any discreet way...gee, I didn't think anyone would NOTICE, eagle-eye!

Well, since then I DID find a Knowlton Papers for sale.

It is NOT USED, and therefore should probably not be on the Second-Hand Shop Topic.....

The Fall River Historical Society has a brand new, "hermetically sealed" copy of Knowlton that they will "inscribe to anyone you wish" for $ 150.00 (! )

As of 24 hours ago they had had my request and one other.  Aparently we BOTH thought the price too steep. (especially since Stef and I own one in common...) (and it originally sold for 49.95$)

If you are DESPERATE, the phone number for FRHS is:
1-508-679-1071.  The gift shop opens at 9 am.  I ended up with ANNe.  And then Dennis.

For info on one brand- new copy of the Knowlton Papers at triple the price-- it is rare - see above message.

All orders are initiated by phone (no e-mail):
1-508-679-1071

Just talked to FRHS again to get an updated list for you-all as to what hard-to-find books are available as of today (they have quite a turn-over it seems),,,
If you go to their web-site go with bated breath and your hopes not too high, because 1/2 of what's listed is no longer in stock..

UPDATED LIST:
Lizzie Borden, Did She Or Didn't She? --The New Bedford Evening Standard reproductions of the newspaper from Aug. 4, 1892-June 21, 1893....over-sized paperback...$19.95 and S/H (abt.$6).
-I recommend-it's fascinating to read these old newspapers...Harry, you would love this book! Get it for yourself for your birthday...

Lizzie Borden Sourcebook --hardbound--reproductions from 41 newspapers, illustrated & photo's..limited edition...1992...$22.95

The Girl In The House Of Hate --hardcover 1953, 144 pages, $15.95...about 1/3 is Lizzie's Inquest Testimony.

Proceedings ed. by Jules Rykebusch, Papers given at the 1992 Centennial Conference in Fall River, on Lizzie Borden and the Crimes.

All the used books listed at the FRHS sweb-site are out of stock.
The ones listed above are what's left of the New Book Section, that I enquired about (I did not enquire for all--only the best ones I was familiar with)--they may have things like the History of the Congregational Church, stuff like that.  I do not know the availability of these "historical" items.
They will be sending me an updated list soon.  If there are any changes to the status of those I posted here by then, I will update you.

Hi Kat -- thought I'd take advantage of this thread to ask you about the Muriel Arnold book -- Hands of Time. (Am I right in remembering that you've used it as a source in the past?) Is it worth the effort I'm putting in trying to find it -- and if it is -- any clues as to where I might obtain a copy?

Also, I notice that in the last LB Quarterly, Terence D. mentions an article about the Swifts (Lizzie's Maplecroft next-door neighbors) and says it's available on the lizzieandrewborden site.  But I seem to be too inept to locate it.  Can anyone tell me where it is?

I thought the FRHS were supposed to put the Knowlton papers out in a paperback book. Has that been shelved?

Diana:
I inter-library loaned the Muriel Arnold book, The Hands of Time, twice, and took extensive notes.
Call your local library and ask them to do this.
They will tell you 4-6 weeks but it will probably be 1 & 1/2.

If not, I think I posted on here somewhere all the sisters addresses who used to sell it.  I'll look in Archives..meanwhile the info is in the LBQ, like 1999.  Stef has all those at the moment, and will be gone the weekend judging Thespian Competitions at High School Level--so need some time...kk

Dennis said that the Hilliard Papers will be "another year or two."

I asked if it was because they had to decipher all that handwriting.  He said, no, they're all getting very good at that...it's the GLOSSARY taking so long!

Turns out they are attempting to research EVERY letter writer in some way, to add background to the edition.

Persoanally, I'd rather have the Hilliard Papers, period.  Then put out the Glossary of names later...
I remember when we first got our Knowlton--so busy READING IT that it was a year before I even noticed a Glossary!

Thanks, Kat -- I found your info on the (Arnold) sisters in the archives.  And I will pursue the inter-library loan option.

I couldn't remember if I had cited the Full & correct TITLE of the Arnold book, which would make it MUCH easier for a Library to find it, right?

It's citation is:
Arnold, Muriel
Lizzie Borden:  Pictorial and Historical- The Hands of Time
Nashua, NH
Tri Flag Press, 1999

It's amazing to me just how many of the newer "Lizzie" books are self-published...a shame....

Thanks! I did actually have the full title info. and that's how I know how hard it is to get on the Web.  It used to be listed on the B&B and the Fall River Historical Society site -- but is no longer.  I should have got it at that time -- but after I'd put out my hard-earned dollars for the Knowlton Papers .... thought I'd wait on the Arnold one.

A lot of the fun of book collecting is in the hunt, though.  So, I'm not too discouraged at this point.

I was looking in Rebello for Lizzie's driving habits...

Came across the info, pg. 386, on Hilliard Papers:

"Fall River Herald News, September 24, 1989 , B5:
Historical Society Gets Another Batch of Lizzie Borden Memorabilia
Marshal Rufus B. Hilliard's papers were given to the Fall River Historical Society by Donald A. Bradbury.  His late wife, Jean (Hilliard) Bradbury was the granddaughter of Marshal Hillard,"

That's 12 & 1/2 years ago !
