Remember when we heard that there might have been a hurricane in 1893 that blew away the Borden sisters furniture in storage?  It was a spurious story from a LINK, provided... I've been keeping my eyes out for BiG WINDS around that time, but as yet, seen nada. BUT, in Victorian Vistas, there was a news article about a BIG STORM in 1900. And last night I found some pictures of a 1944 Hurricane. I had just sent one of these to a friend on the Forum, and then I looked at the rest and thougt, Heck, let's all look at them.  (This is my first chance on-line so far today, to even review what I had "captured" at dawn.)

Wow!  Quite abit of devestation there!  I would think that maybe the storm that washed away the Borden family's furniture would have been during their lifetime, the one in 1900.  But, I guess it could even be later too.  I don't recall now, was it a hurricane or what?

Happy Eve of Your Birthday!

Anyway, you're the one that revived the Link that says their stuff was washed away....I think it's all really Funny.    BUT, I was looking, as I said for big winds, but I figured about the time of the move, 1893.  Apparently there were several Big Winds between 1900 and 1944, one especially in 1938 (?)  Stef would know that one!

Thanks, Kat!  Well, thats the thing with some of these information sources, some sound so plausible, that maybe they could have happened?  If it wiped out the waterfront where this storage warehouse was, I think would be front page news for the area, but, when did it allegedly happen?

Unless I'm wrong, that 1938 hurricane hit most of the east coast.  I recall that, after I moved to lower South Carolina near the Georgia line and near the coast, in the late 1930s, there was a really big storm.  I went out onto our new front porch and was almost blown off!  I remember having the feeling that the wind was blowing me up onto my tiptoes, and I couldn't set my feet down flat.
(I'm sure my mother was yelling, "Get back in this house!")

The 1938 storm is known as The Great New England Hurricane of 1938 and struck on September 21 of that year. It devastated parts of Long Island, NY, and much of coastal and interior New England. There were hundreds of deaths and enormous property damage done as a result of this storm. My father, who at the time lived in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts, used to tell about the destruction in that area - trees and wires down, power out, flooding, and the like. My mother lived near Boston (my parents were not yet married) and told of all the trees being flattened in a public park, a city-type park, near her family's house.

There are a variety of websites which tell about this hurricane; a short but informative description can be found at the following address. www.erh.noaa.gov/er/box/hurricane1938.htm

WOW, you guys!
Thanks for the extra info.  I got "goosebumps".

Stef had a pamphlet on that storm but it was then given as a gift, so we did not really peruse the item...(like one doesn't read the new book one bought to give away...).

My neighbor remembers that storm.  They were in Maryland at the time.

Are there any more recollections out there?
