They just started with Lizzie Borden.
WEX REX of Framingham, assigned values to a few silver pieces
that were reported to him as once belonging to Lizzie.
There were 2 large spoons, and one small spoon and a salt
shaker that looked partly cut crystal. These items were
assessed at about $2,000. The silver content was to
be taken into account as well as the provenance which the
man who brought them claimed were listed in REBELLO!
It may have been mainly a small inlaid side round table that
he claimed was in Rebello, but he didn't name the book.
The association was explained as his aunt (or great aunt?)
used to drive Lizzie around and was one of her friends and
these items were left to her in the will.
The man was not identified.
I think they both had pony-tails and were about a similar
age...about 62.
This all just happened so fast I sat right down and wrote
about it immediately. This is my most recent memory
of what was just shown in about 3 minutes, if that.
I posted the THREAD title first, to alert ROADSHOW was in
Boston, and on NOW EDST, then clicked "EDIT" to
write the body of this post

Well, I missed that one. I'll try to
find a rerun. They looked "about 62"?
I love it! Kat, you are indeed perspicacious, and I
mean that as a compliment. However, I do find a minor
hole in their story. Their relative used to drive Lizzie
around? Why? We know Lizzie had her own driver.
More likely Lizzie's driver would have driven Lizzie and the
relative around in Lizzie's very roomy car. I remember
the "Lizzie from Abbie" silver cup in Rebello, but
no other silver. Checked out his "Memorabilia"
section (pp. 502-506); no mention of these items. (Could
be elsewhere in the book, of course.) To be of any worth,
a provenance needs to be written. Do we have any idea
what this relative's name was?

He was un-named and he pointed to an indented
section of Rebello...I think it was Lizzie's will. And
I got the impression it was to the "table" he was
first referring.
I thought the same as you as to the *driver* but maybe just
maybe the drivers WIFE rode along in front? It might
have been a treat? That would be [edit here:]Terry family,
wouldn't it?
I need to look this up...They got a lot out of Lizzie...
We can always ask Wex Rez , or whatever the Framingham
authority's name was (see above...)
[Edit Here:]
Page 332 Rebello--"Furniture, Schedule A"
Lists the "Octaganal Inlaid Stand, $15."
Maybe that was it.
It was only shown close up and for a second or two.
Pg. 331 says the furniture was given to Lee Cleverly Lanza.

The show I saw advertised the Gardner Museum
at the very beginning, then went straight to one appraisal,
then BAM! Into the Lizzie segment.
This was all in the first 5 minutes!
Gook Luck.

In our area, they usually air the same show
several times during the week. I think the PBS stations
tend to do their own thing with air times though. I
haven't been watching Antiques Road Show regularly, because
they've been airing a lot of reruns in our area. Of
course, I guess this is a rerun that I must've missed the
first time around.

A conversation from April 1st, about this show.
OH I hope someone catches it and takes notes...someone who
knows about items like these...at least you'll be prepared.
(It all happened so fast! )

I haven't been able to locate that show on
my local TV schedule. I was looking at Lizzie's will
in Rebello tonight. Most of the people mentioned in
her will received money, not household items. Some specific
pieces of jewelry were left to several friends. Ellen
B. Terry, wife of the chauffeur, got $2,000. Ellen Miller,
the housekeeper, got $3,000 and the contents of her own room
"if she wants them." The residue, which would
probably include silver and furniture, went in equal shares
to Grace Howe and Helen Leighton. Interestingly, there
doesn't seem to be any silver listed in the inventory of Lizzie's
belongings. Did she eat with her hands? Use plastic?
"China" is mentioned as being one of the things
Grace Howe was to get "second choice" of.
(Who got first choice?) About the only indented section
I see in Rebello is the inventory (page 332), which does list
several tables, but no silver. Yet another mystery...
It's also interesting that the appraiser on ARS talked about
the silver's melt-down value, because the melt-down value
of silver is usually pretty paltry. Whatever silver
Lizzie might have had I would think would derive most of its
value from its connection to her!

Well, I did watch 1/2 a Boston episode tonight
around 9:30.
The last piece was an early American Soldiers Tomahawk.
It was gorgeous! It may have had Washinton's initials
on one side. The appraiser said it belonged in a museum
as a part of our heritage. (Hint-Hint...please donate?)
It was valued at $100,000 I think....
It looked like a nice weapon to kill our Bordens...handle
about 14", with a cutting edge of about 3".

I tried the ARS website, but the edited comments
on the Boston shows didn't mention Lizzie at all. The
tomahawk was mentioned, though. I get the feeling the
ARS experts either didn't take the "Lizzie" claim
very seriouly, or they don't think a connection to Lizzie
means much. Now if I could only convince those people
with the stock-dividend ledger it's worthless. (I really
don't think it's worthless, but I think they have an elevated
idea of its value.) I'm not greedy...I'd like to have one
-- just one -- Lizzie autograph, but it must be an authenticated
one. None of that bogus eBay stuff.

It's strange looking up T.V. listings...isn't
it?
Anyway, the episode is #608 and will mention the Gardner
Museum...
(one museum in Boston I can claim to have toured!)

Oh, What I wouldn't give to own something
that once belonged to Lizzie (whoops-better watch my words
here, isn't this when the Devil pops up with a big book for
me to sign?) But a ring or something, or a brooch? Wouldn't
that be awesome? (and a little creepy)
Navagation
