Hello all-just wanted to share this gaff I made last night at my Toastmasters meeting. They are graciously allowing me to prepare for my slide show on Lizzie there-with much encouragment and critique. I rented a slide projector, but had only an hour to get familiar with the machine, arrange my slides, and revamp a narrative. I did the best I could in an hour, and flew to the meeting. All was going well, I had their attention, was clicking away getting used to the remote control, my self-conciousness slipping away as I warmed up to my subject, and then disaster struck. I'd introduced the immediate family members and was about to show 92 Second St. for the first time.
I went on, "And then, in 1872, Andrew moved his family into this dwelling" (click) and instead of a slide of 92 Second, up popped a photo of Uncle Morse! I just kept right on talking, "This lovely two family Quaker style home that Andrew converted into a one family...no running water, and not hooked up to a gas main..." (I ad-libbed the 'Quaker style' in deference to Morse's humble attire) The spectators cracked up...And I finally got the right shot onto the screen!

That's funny Kash.  You should have used the barn.

Did you find yourself more relaxed after the incident?  I should think after the initial embarrassment it would be easier as the group would be more on your side (if they weren't already).

I agree with Harry...might be the best thing that could have happened, as it probably broke the tension.  A minor mishap, I would call it.  I remember that I was once giving a briefing for a bunch of government bigwigs in one of our field offices, and I suddenly realized I had completely lost their interest.  They were staring fixedly out of the window behind me.  I turned to look and saw that a window-cleaning crew had chosen to begin cleaning that very window, many stories up.  All I could think of was to ad lib: "Wow!  Our traveling dog-and-pony show now has an aerial act."

Yes, this is my third time (doing short excerpts) at Toastmasters and although the butterflies (or in my case, moths) in the stomach never really go away,I am much more confident now. Toastmasters is a great way to help overcome the fear of-or just improve-public speaking and communication in general. As an exercise each meeting, we are called up to the podium one at a time and given a card with a topic, or sentence on it, and asked to elaborate for a minute. You dont know what the subject will be, and it is to help you learn to 'think on your feet' Believe me, after a few of those, talking about Lizzie was almost a breeze!

I also had a slide of the Borden's parlour now, from a visit to the B&B. Prominantly displayed is a television set which I described as "The Borden's original TV and VCR with some of Lizzie's favorite tapes, including 'Enya Live'" chuckle :0)

That's pretty funny!
How about "She loved to view all the video tapes of herself and made copies and sent them to Moody as a momento of an interesting occasion?" {The only problem with this is it's from V. Lincoln]
