1. "Lizzie Decor"
Posted by zoe219 on Sep-7th-02 at 11:32 PM

I asked this question on "the Other" Lizzie site and got some great ideas.  Unfortunately, my hard copies were destroyed and I'm unable to get the pages from "the Other" site back up.  So folks help me please!

The new house is finally up & I'm in it.  I need ideas to decorate the master bathroom "Lizzie style"?

I'm going w/ blues, have a gorgeous vintage picture of pansies in vintage frame, every kind & size of pear imaginable, a ceremonial ax (great buy at an antique store in Ohio), using emamelware slop buckets as wastebaskets, and of course pictures of Lizzie.

Can anyone think of anything else to add ?  Come on folks, I want this room REALLY eye popping.

Hello.
I think I remember this question from before...
But, I'm sorry, I don't quite understand:  What is the "new house that is finally up and you're in it"?

I remember reading that at Maplecroft she had a gilded ceiling
(or was it walls?), they sell gilt kits at craft stores, it would
take awhile to do a ceiling. You also need some old Harper's magazines, and let's see, what else? If you have any windows make them leaded glass & have a 'B' etched into it. For just Victorian touches you could add bead board paneling & a wooden toilet seat &
lace curtains (Lizzie touch--use handkerchiefs as a topper), if you have a linen closet take the door off & replace it with a portiere.

You could also get some linen guest or tea towels & have
'B''s embroidered on them, in blue of course. Or even the axes/pears/pansies would work. You can have pictures made
into transfers that you can put on just about anything.

How about a white cotton shower curtain with the different pictures
of Lizzie on it? You could transfer them on & then paint frames
around them? You can probably find curtain hooks made like pansies, I think there is a link on here for a catalog called 'Terry's Village' they had a lot of things with pansies on it.

Here is the link to Terry's Village, I checked & they don't have
any pansy shower curtain hooks, but they do have them in drawer pulls.

How about those bird shower curtain rings?  You could get some pigeon rings for your shower curtain.  You could also paper the upper portion or all of your walls with Xerox copies of the newspaper coverage of the Borden murders.  Tea stain them first and make sure you cover them with a few coats of polyurathan or varnish.

Susan, that is a great idea! I never thought about that.
I've seen them wallpaper with book pages & newspapers on decorating shows, that would be perfect!

Thanks for the really great ideas.  I especially love the wallpaper idea.  I love the shower curtain idea, but can't use a shower curtain!  Found some wonderful calico fabric w/ tiny pansies on it to make window curtains.  I'm crocheting the tie-backs for them.

Kat, My new house was sposed to be finished a year ago....when I asked for ideas on "the other" site.  Things sure didn't go as smoothly as I planned, hmmmm!

I'm so glad you came back and explained that.
I thought maybe you were designing a "Virtual House"--like a facsimile 92 Second Street.

My gosh, a year to get into a house??
That STINKS!

Yes, it sure does, but even "stinkier" is trying to get the builders to return & fix the screwups......and there are many.   Wish I was THE lawyer instead of paying one...pit bull that he is.
But at least I'm living in the house instead of a room at my brothers.

Didn't Lizzie bring back prints of great paintings she'd seen in Europe?  That might be a nice addition.

These pansy cups & saucers are just beautiful, and only $1.

Not my sale---I would have charged more.

Currently on eBay they also have quite a few handkerchiefs
with pansies on them, you could try a shadowbox frame, that seems
like it would look perfect in a bath. This is a little more
pricey it is $90 & is  a circa 1900 print called "Shower of Pansies",
get it? 'Shower' in the bath?

Now I'm going to look for pears.

I picked up 2 handpainted pansy plates at a rummage sale over the weekend....$2 each. Just beautiful.  I think the one picture I have of pansies will be sufficient.  I've been picking up small frames to use for pictures of the Borden family, et.al.  I have more pears than I know what to do with...there's SO MANY out there....glass ones, brocade, velvet, beaded...............

At the rummage sale I "grabbed" a wonderful royal blue speckled graniteware chamber pot. No lid, but since it was a quarter, I'm not going to fuss.  Not sure which bedroom I'll use it in (bed I'll slide it under?)

You could plant some pansies in your chamberpot, wouldn't that be fun?

I am ashamed to say I broke our antique chamberpot a few years ago.  I don't know what it was made of, but it disintegrated like china.
It had gilding around the rim!

Kimberly, I was kidding!

So, Kat, having never used a chamber pot myself, do you know, does one just sit right on it?  Or, was this where those commode or potty chairs came in?  I know that most homes that had them just kept them under the bed which would make me believe that you just sat on it.  I'm sorry if this is indelicate for anyone, I'm just curious.

Hey!  The vacuum cleaner wand fell on it, not me!
I have no idea of the actual usage but I can imagine...

We also had one long ago (our mom collected antiques) that had a decal of a big ole' EYE in the bottom of the pot...someone who made it 60  years before That broke, had a sense of humor, or else no sense at all!

I do have a little chamberpot sitting on the window sill
above the kitchen sink. You should try decorating with odd
stuff like that Susan, people don't gag or anything. I also have a vintage enamel bedpan, that really doesn't seem as
decorative. So it is kept put away.

It might just be a TN thing but I've seen people put old
toilets out in their yard & plant flowers in them, I don't
know why exactly. And no, I am not one of them.

That one I broke, in the old days when I was young, had been used as a planter.

You two!  Which made me think of those big ol' truck tires turned into planters, strange!  The only sort of thing I ever heard about anything like this was from my one great-grandmother who grew morning glories up and over the outhouse, to make it more pretty, I guess?

Susan, you poor thing! You have to go all the way back
to your great-grandmother to find an outhouse in your family
tree? My mother had one as a young'un.

That is pretty!  But, that handle seems awful small for such a big and heavy piece of china!

I recall a story about a woman who bought what she thought was an antique china punchbowl (with double handles) at an antique shop.  She was using it to serve refreshments at a party when someone pointed out to her what its original use was.  The punch hadn't been terrribly popular with her guests...

That must have been the world's biggest chamberpot!
Did they have 'family' pots, I wonder?
