A man was convicted today of starving his infant son to death. He was a member of a radical Christian cult and was told by one of the members that they had a vision that the child should not eat any solid food. The man followed the vision and his son died.

The trial was held in Taunton, Mass.

Organized religion strikes again!  (Or maybe I should say "disorganized religion.")

Can a "cult" really be part of "organized religion"?
Please watch your language!!! Not that they're perfect, but you are giving a wrong rap to an innocent party, again.

sorry ray, I was trying to remember the correct wording of the group that this man belonged to.

I just checked court tv and they have this description in their reporting of the verdict:

Sect leader convicted of first-degree murder in starvation death of baby son

TAUNTON, Mass. (AP) --A leader of a religious sect who said he believed he was fulfilling God's prophesy and expected a miracle as he watched his infant son starve to death was convicted Friday of first-degree murder.

Jacques Robidoux, 29, testified in his own defense that he was following God's instructions as he withheld solid food for 51 days from his son, Samuel. The boy died died April 26, 1999, three days shy of his first birthday.

Robidoux is one of the leaders of a small sect known as "The Body," a group that rejects modern medicine, government and science.

Well, let's see...I reject modern government, and I'm trying to reject modern medicine.  That leaves modern science.  Two out of three ain't bad!  (I wonder what language it is that we're supposed to mind.  I didn't see any profanity in anybody's post.)

An bovious example of mental illness. The jury will decide the extent.
I thought Andrea Yates was also mentally ill, but the jury decided otherwise. (If it was only one, yes; but to do all five shows clarity of mind.)

Not necessarily, Ray. This fervent religious commitment to the group's faith in God should not be confused with mental illness. If you think this, then all extreme religious types are likewise out of their minds. Almost all of the world's religions began as a cult. While I am in no way advocating starving your child in the name of God, I think this guy knew what he was doing and what the risk was. His faith let him down.

Anyone starving their children has to be SICK in one way or another.
God knows there's plenty of examples due to war, famine, and disease! It appears to be the Sin of Pride here. (I'm not a religious person.)
