In yesterday's mail, we received a publication called "Extraordinary Properties," put out by a real estate company that apparently thinks we have a LOT more money than we actually do.  In this "catalog," a million-dollar house is a fixer-upper.  There are, however, a few out-of-area houses that are slightly more affordable.  One of them is from the same era and in pretty much the same style as Maplecroft.  It's called The Governor's House and was built in 1890 for a former Governor of Maryland. It has an inviting wrap-around porch and three turrets and looks a lot better than Maplecroft, IMHO.  The listing says it's "lovingly restored" and contains 10,000 square feet.  There are ten fireplaces with beautiful mantels, handpainted ceilings and stained glass windows.  The foyer has its own fireplace and a staircase remarkably like the one at Maplecroft.  Gorgeous woodwork!  This house is located in the town of Snow Hill, in a resort area called the Eastern Shore of Maryland.  Most of the town is a historic area, located on the Pocomoke River.  Similar house with a historic connection, probably in a better location (location! location! location!), more spacious-looking and better kept up.  Asking price is $699,000.

Oh my! It is spectacular! What a wonderful house. And what a good price!

Yes, when put in this kind of perspective, $725,000 seems like way too much to ask for Maplecroft. Thanks Edisto!

Thanks, Edisto.  What a gorgeous home, particularly on the inside!  That staircase was just made to make an entrance on in some long beautiful gown.  This property reminds me of all the grand old homes in the town my aunt lives in on the Jersey Shore.  Spring Lake, if you ever get a chance to go there, you won't be disappointed by the homes!  They filmed the movie "Ragtime" up at the remaining grand hotel thats up on the beach.  The kind of place Lizzie would have stayed at in the summer months once she became wealthy.  *sigh*  They just don't make houses like they used to.

Oh!  Thank You!
I love Virtual Tours!
That was wonderful.
The house seems so solid and substantial.

We have some beautiful turn of the century houses here,
they are on the streets leading from the town square --
they are 5000+++ square feet & usually sell for less than
$200,000. Most are prettier than Maplecroft's outside, too.
Of course, my town only has 12,000 people in it -- but it
does seem like Mr. Dube is, ahem, trying to make a killing?

Any house is worth no more than what someone is willing to pay.
What is an ten-year old car worth? Or a 120 year old house?

Ah, so you live at the Jersey shore, NJ?  I'm originally from New Jersey myself, live in California now.  Have you been to Ocean Grove?  I used to live right next door to it in Asbury Park for a short while, on weekends I would go over to eat breakfast at my cousin's cafe in Ocean Grove and wander around the streets.

Do you know if Billy Joel still owns that grand piano shaped house, umm, forget the town's name, right after Loch Arbor.  I remember when they were building that thing, quite the ocean view from that house!
