I'm no cook but these almost look like they're worth reading. Reproductions of 1884 and 1896 cook books.  Note the size of these books.

Pass the mutton, please. I doubt if Bridget used a cook book. I don't think she could read.

Even I have heard of these cooking schools.
Thanks for the link!

I learned at our mother's knee.
She was of the old opinion that children were for helping around the house.  The more children, the more workers!
She did teach us all to cook.  Well, 4 out of 5.
Her bible was The American Woman's COOK BOOK, published first, 1938, Chicago.  Her edition, which is falling apart, is 1944.  Edited by the Director of the Culinary Arts Institute, with Color Plates!

It's a wonderful, and basic book.
She went on to become a gourmet cook and did win an award from the Orlando Sentinel newspaper receipe competiton for Parmesan Bread.

Two of our brother's can whip up a Thanksgiving meal for 20 including homemade apple pie.

Thanks for the nice link, Harry.  I have a couple old Fanny Farmer's in my basement.  They're cool to look thru.
Kat, you made me hungry.

I like The Virginia Housewife Or: Methodical Cook 1824
By Mary Randolph, it has some rather nasty sounding
dishes -- grilled calf's head and fried calf's feet
and -- shoulder of mutton with celery sauce. Yummy.

Cool.  Thanks, Harry.  I wonder if the Borden's had Mrs. Lincoln's cookbook in the house?  I wish I had my greatgrandmother's recipes, now that would make a book!  Everything from scratch.
