There is a letter on eBay for auction where Hosea Knowlton issues an endorsement of another lawyer for membership in a club.

I found it amusing in that he describes the cadidate as "clubbable". Sounds like a hard way to get in.

Now thats a cool piece.  I too like the "clubbable" candidate!    I wonder how Hosea wrote about our Lizzie?  Did he describe her as "ax-citable"?

So Knowlton seems to think DeGoosh (interesting name) won't be just sitting around on his laurels once he gets clubbed. I noticed in Knowlton's signature that his t-crossing is to the right (doesn't touch the stem) and it has a hook on the end of it. I am not an expert but from what I know of handwriting analysis, t-crossings to the right of the t-stem in all the books I have read on the subject indicate having a temper. Even if he didn't always cross to the right when he signed this letter it indicates to me he was somewhat angry or put out. Maybe he had been trying to get this man in and his wishes weren't being acknowledged.

If Lizzie has this mark in her handwriting (I think she did) then the inquest interactions would be more than just dislike of one another at the time, they would both have personalities with high tempers, an explosive combination. Just thinking.

"himfully".  ROFL.

"Clubbable" = able to withstand the initiation ceremony??

That paper looks awfully white for a century old letter. Unfolded too? What is the watermark like (the first test of old paper)?
...
Did "they" use blue ink on formal letters? The company letter head seems to negate private use?

"Clubbable" may be a code word for a White Anglo-Protestant Male, and someone who can be used and wants to use the society.

Every read a book on secret societies? Jim Marrs book would do for a start.

The date on this letter appears to be October 13, 1902. That is only a little more than two months before Hosea Knowlton died, on December 18, 1902.

Tufts is in Boston but their law school campus is in Medford, Mass. The law school only opened in 1933, so they probably went to the Boston campus.

Here is a timeline of Tufts.

I believe I am the Tufts graduate [1973] Kat refers to in message #4 above. Hosea Knowlton graduated from Tufts College [now Tufts University] in 1867 and subsequently attended Harvard Law School. Knowlton was a member of Theta Delta Chi fraternity as well as Phi Beta Kappa. He served as a trustee of Tufts for many years including 1892 and 1893. Knowlton was also an active member of the Universalist Society in New Bedford, MA. His father was a Universalist minister and Tufts was founded by members of the Universalist denomination.

Actually, the original and still main campus of Tufts is in Medford, MA, about five miles northwest of downtown Boston. The campus straddles the city line separating Medford and Somerville, MA, but the main administration building is on the Medford side, hence the official Medford address. This campus is where Hosea Knowlton attended college. The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy which Stefani alludes to is located on the Medford campus. However, it is a graduate school of international law and diplomacy and not a law school in the ordinary sense. The Tufts Medical and Dental Schools are located in downtown Boston, not far from where Lizzie Borden's favorite Boston hotels, restaurants, and theaters stood.
