Hi Ross -
I haven't found a copy.  But I thought I'd post here so your thread would stay afloat.

Do you live in a big city?
Because Stef just took a vacation and she always checks big used book stores everywhere she goes.
She found a Knowlton Papers copy used 2 weeks ago in a bookstore, and got it for $20.
She was looking for one of her colleagues/researchers.  What a surprise!

Yes Kat, I live in Baltimore, Maryland.  The used bookstores around here are in areas that I don't frequent.  But you DO have a good idea.  I think I take some time this week and call some of the used bookstores and see if any of them happen to have it.  Even if they don't have it, they could probably take my name in case a copy comes in in the future.  So thanks.  I'm still checking Amazon.com regularly too, in case one shows up there.

Our dad once had a book called The Report From Iron Mountain.
He had loved that book.  I don't know why.
He lent it out and we moved or something and one day he said to me he wanted that book and told me to figure out how to accomplish that for him.

I went downtown to a nearby city and found a rare & used book store who advertised that they could find any book.  I contracted for them to put out a search.  No money down, just a verbal acknowledgement that I probably would purchase it if found.

About a month later he called and I went to look at the copy and it was in good shape.  I bought it and presented it to our dad who had no doubt that I would come through.

The thing was, that book was very reasonably priced.  It was probably about the same price as when new.
They do the search and they have the contacts and I can't figure out how they make their money!

So good luck!  And BTW:  It is always a good idea for everyone to get to know their local used book dealers!  I have actually made friends with mine.

Well, I called a bunch of the used bookstores today.  Nobody had the book, but they gave me a number of websites that do searches for used books.  I checked out quite a few of those websites.  About half of them didn't even have the book listed.  The other half of them did have the book listed, but it is unavailable at this time.  But it's okay.  I know I'll get it eventually.  I just have to keep checking for it.  I put my name on a lot of these websites so that they will e-mail me if a copy turns up.  And Kat, by coincidence, I have a copy of The Report From Iron Mountain in my bookcase in the den right now.  I read it a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it.  I appreciate your father's taste.

I had a feeling you did!
I am in my sensitive mode right now.

I used to subscribe to the Fortean Times and they reviewed it as a decading ending round-up of books they had investigated.  The article said it was a spoof of outrageous porportions and it sounded like they thought it was as fake as the first Loch Ness photo.

Do you know anything about that?  I haven't read it.  Our dad was a rocket scientist and he never revealed to me what he thought of the book.  I was under the impression that he believed it.
It made me feel odd that the magazine (unaffiliated with the book itself) claimed it was a hoax.

According to the site below -- this book, which purported to be a 'secret' report -- was indeed a hoax.

"The mystery of who had written the report was revealed in 1972 when Lewin declared in an article in the New York Times that he had penned the entire report. In other words, there was no Special Study Group and no government plot to maintain a state of war. The entire report had been a hoax. More details of the creation of the hoax were given in 1996 when Simon & Schuster reprinted the Report with a new introduction."

Well, Kat, if your father believed the book, he was certainly in good company.  A LOT of people believed it.  And I remember that during my junior high and high school years back in the 70s, I had  two different teachers at different times who told our class about the book and discussed it as if it were perfectly legitimate.  I didn't actually read the book until the late 90s, and by that time  it had become common knowledge that the book was a hoax.  But it's still a fascinating, thought-provoking read.

Well, you guys, thanks.

I don't know if our dad believed the book.  He had the original, twice, so no new Intro.
But he didn't die until 1987, so maybe he knew by then.
The only books he liked that he could get me to read and discuss with him were true crime and Michener, and it was only about 2 Micheners.

"Report from Iron Mountain" was 'fiction' that portrayed real-life too well. You can sometime tell the truth in FICTION w/o getting any nasty suits or other forms of revenge. It projects current trends, and calls it planned?

For example, remember "Primary Colors", a 'roman a clef' about a certain governor who was elected president? It was 'fiction', but all too true to life. I think Richard Condon's "Winter Kills" is as good an explanation for JFK's death as anyone else, since NOBODY was there with a camera or recorder. (Unless you really believe in a "lone gunman"!)

One simple fact says "professional hit" by a conspiracy. Other dead presidents were done in by a pistol, up close and personal. There is no way to escape capture and death! Only a rifle allows shooting from a distance, then making a getaway for the money. Of course, this alone is not proof. But too many other unexplained things, like the head of organized crime (bagman) in Dallas silencing the patsy, etc.

Thanks Georgie.  I already put it on my wish list on half.com a couple of weeks ago, so hopefully I'll be getting a notification from them at some point.  I'll still look elsewhere in the meantime.  Off the subject though, did anyone see that they have a used copy of Proceedings by Jules Rykebusch listed on amazon.com for $468.95!!!  Are they kidding?!?!  They had a used one listed on amazon.com a couple of weeks ago for $120, but I called the Fall River Historical Society and ordered one of the few new copies that they have left for $30.  I just received it in the mail today.  I certainly feel sorry for anyone who pays $468 for a used one when they could get a new one from FRHS.

Will we ever find out the answer to this intriguing treasure hunt?
Or will this be the usual cliff-hanger episode we see in the Spring on T.V.?

Well, Kat, the outcome of the treasure hunt is that I just received my copy of The Knowlton Papers in the mail today.  Augusta was kind enough to tell me about a copy that was listed on amazon.com, but I had already discovered that myself.  And THAT copy turned out to no longer be available, even though it is still being listed as available on amazon.com.  But late last week I was lucky enough to locate another copy and order it.  I just received it in the mail today.  So I'm very happy to finally get a copy of it; and this thread may officially die now.
