Lizzie had a house in Nebraska?

Hi all, I'm new to the group but find the discussions fascinating so far...

I recently heard that sometime after the murders, Lizzie Borden purchased a house near Hebron, NE. Apparently she never lived there - I don't think anyone ever did. Can anyone confirm that Lizzie did indeed purchase this house or cause it to have been built? Has anyone else heard of this house, or perhaps even seen it?

If this information is credible, this is an interesting footnote to the story. Thanks!

HI!
Hope this is helpful:

I'm rummaging around in Rebello*, thinking there might not be a legitimate Nebraska connection. Thought I'd check wills. This is an entry in Uncle John Morse's will:

"Mrs. Amy Andrews, niece, Scotts Bluff, Nebraska children of Selecta Morse Shaw, married Philip Shaw, Jr."

Joe and Ms. Beaulieu (sp?) found reference to Nebraska while researching old news items on John Morse:

"John Morse and J. C. Anderson have returned from a trip thru Nebraska and Kansas, driving overland. The two enjoyed themselves as much as when they were boys." Glenwood Opinion, June 14, 1900: 8.

Rebello, 269:
"Rumors"

"Bordens Lived West / Lizzie Was a School Teacher and Objected to Second Marriage," New Bedford Daily Mercury, Friday, June 29, 1893: 2.

"It was erroneously reported that Lizzie lived on a farm in Glenwood Mills County, Iowa, just across the river from Omaha, Nebraska, from 1870 to 1883. It was at this time that Andrew married Abby, according to this report."

Malvern Leader, IA, June 29, 1893.

"The Nonpareil [at Council Bluffs], is authority for the statement that Lizzie Borden, who was tried and acquitted of the murder of her father and stepmother at Fall River, Mass., and whose trial created such widespread interest, was for some years a resident of Mills County, living with her parents near Glenwood. It was while living in this county that the murdered couple were married. Lizzie was a school teacher and taught in several districts near Glenwood."

--[I recall seeing the copy of this original item during Joe's research on Morse]:
Red Oak Sun, IA, June 30, 1893.

"Lizzie Borden, of Fall River, Mass., who was recently tried for the murder of her father and step-mother and declared by the jury not guilty, used to live near Glenwood and taught school in Mills County. Her father and her step-mother were married in Mills County.”

"Hastings,"' Malvern Leader, IA, July 6, 1893.

"It is said by those who are in position to know that it is a mistake in regard to Miss Lizzie Borden or her father ever living in Mills County, as published in the Council Bluffs papers. It must have been some other family of that name."

These are what I recall on Lizzie and Nebraska.
Anyone else know anything more?

Hi Kat! Thanks for your reply. Very interesting. Only thing is, the article in the paper where I saw this recent reference was very clear about the house being outside the town of Hebron, NE (not IA).

The article I read was quoting a local woman who used to beg her father to take her past "Lizzie Borden's house" on their trips to the dentist in Hebron. The woman seemed quite certain that the house had been built specifically for Lizzie Borden, but that she had never moved there. Of course, recollections can be fuzzy, and it's possible the story was only a legend, and not in fact true. I just found it interesting...something I had never heard before and wondered if it could be substantiated.

Great information though, and maybe it all fits with the Nebraska house somehow? Yet another mystery!

Stefani, as webmistress, was once contacted by a magazine who was involved with a prize give-away of a B&B in another state. The reporter wished to know the "Lizzie and Emma Borden" connection which the B&B touted. Stef passed the query on to me.
I did a genealogy for the reporter and found the connection was way back; she took this to the local historical society and found out there was not a shred of evidence that the Borden girls ever stayed there. The owners fessed up that it was a publicity ploy (but they did think it was plausible- but it wasn't) and the contest continued without the Lizzie Borden reference, was given away and everyone was happy.

I think if you are anywhere near NE., you might fish around there because I don't think any of us would find a reference from where we are.

Is that your route, Audrey? Going overland?
I wonder how long travel time might have been in say, 1900?

Uncle John used to make the trip fairly regularly. I think railroad travel was not as bad as we would imagine in the late 1800's and in some cases pretty good.

After my recent trip to Fall River by air that slow kind of travel doesn't look so bad. We did great once we got out of the Boston area but their traffic was horrendous. Thank goodness Stef found the HOV lane.

I must have shifty eyes because at the Boston airport they volunteered me for an extensive search. Actually it was pretty easy and the only additional item I had to remove was my belt. They also went through my carry-on bag and shaving kit.

Yes Audrey! By rail?
How long would that take I wonder? I think it took Morse a week to get to Hastings in December, from the Fall River area.
The 5th thru the 12th or something like that.

It is true....well the rumor at least.

My family and I recently moved to Chester, NE. (12Miles south of HEBRON,NE), from Chicago,IL. While working at a pottery studio I was told that there is an old Mansion on the outskirts of town that was built for Lizzie & her Sister. It is one of two identical properties. These mansions were built exactly the same yet one is in Nebraska and the other one is in IOWA. I was also told that the property had been vacant for way too many years and that the local teens would sneak in and hang out. Being an avid spookster I guess you could say. I decided to go investigate. It has been recently purchased and remod6was under way. I did sneak around the property and was able to see into the ballroom area. The front entrance way was already remodeled and you can tell that the windows were being replaced on one side of the property. However it was in great shape considering the years of neglect and abuse from local teens. I wish I had taken pictures but it was such a spur of the moment thing I didn't plan or pack anything.
After finding this forum tonight Oct.8th 2018. Ithe makes me want to go back and see what has been done in the past 2yrs since I've been there.

Now the real story here is....is this story true of it being Lizzie Borden's house. Not only have I heard it from multiple locals but as well as from you now. What is the possibility of this story traveling far outside the towns limts.

Here is my zipcodear 68327 if you look at Google maps and follow my place and go north up 81 to hwy 136 &turn east....about a mile out there is a service road (first road on the right) in which you would turn right on and about a mile and half down is the property on the left side.

I'm going to see if I can Google Earth it. Send me a message if anyone still reads this.

Tony.

ToniOnce, It would be interesting to know if the house was actually belonging to Andrew or Lizzie or if it was owned by another family member. I just joined this forum today and I'm thrilled that I found it. I'm here in Monmouth County, NJ.

But if you can find a block and lot for that property and go to the County records department. You might or they might be able to locate who the owners of the land were back in 1870 to 1883I.

Interesting.... I wonder why Andrew went out west with Lizzie? Did he know Abby prior to going out west? For they married in Mills Co. Iowa
Did Emma go with them? Was he going out to do business with John Morse? Or meet other family members? Why did they stay out west for so long specially when Andrew had businesses in Fall River?
So may questions. The more I read... the more I have.

My husband is related through his great aunt who married a Borden. Our Borden is a direct descendant from Francis Borden Brother to Lizzie's 5th great grandfather. He is also related to Hannah C Almy, Anthony Morses's first wife. Hannah's 4th great grandfather Christopher Almy was the brother of Katherine Almy who married Bartholomew West my husbands 6th great grandfather.
Funny how so many tie in down the lines. Kath

I think Andrew and Abby were married in Fall River at her sister's home, 1865. The house is still standing in Fall River, I've seen pictures posted online.

I read through the information in the link that is posted above by Susib and AmyBarker-Rollins. I'm sorry, but I don't see the connection between the mansion in that article and Lizzie or Andrew Borden.
