Borden Headstones In Oak Grove Cemetery

Post by stuartwsa »

We all know that Lizzie and Emma bought and inspected the monument and headstones for the Borden family. But do we know if mother Sarah and baby Alice had earlier headstones that were removed when the new ones were installed? I can't imagine Andrew letting his first wife and baby daughter to lie in Oak Grove for almost thirty years in unmarked graves.

Hey stuartwsa!

According to the gentleman at the Fall River Historical Society, there were headstones/or/stone in place when Sarah and Alice died. When Lizzie called for a monument headstone to be placed on the plot in 1894 they were replaced. According to Lizzie's instruction at the time, a large memorial stone would be installed along with 4 small matching granite headstones for Andrew, Sarah, Abby, and Alice. Which begs the question, for which there's probably a simple if not an ethical retort, why would Lizzie give Abby a headstone if she hated her so much. I suppose if she did not that it could be worst than the actual killing. Or perhaps looking at the stone gave her satisfaction that Abby was indeed dead. Or the wild assumption that Lizzie did not hate her at all... :-?

There are students of the Borden case, such as many here, and then there are psychos such as the person who left the ax on Lizzie's grave. Disrespect of the dead on an imbecilic level.
