Hiram C. Harrington Family

Post by KGDevil »

Parents of Hiram C. Harrington:

George B. Harrington (October 1, 1798 - September 13, 1883) and Mercy A. Hopkins (March 16, 1802- February 14, 1877.)

George B. Harrington was born in Greenwich, Rhode Island to Carr Harrington (May 16, 1771 - August 1,1859) and Lydia (Bailey) Harrington (1773 – November 19, 1836). Carr and Lydia were married on August 1, 1795 in Greenwich. George had four siblings who were Reuben, Samuel, Slocum, and Phoebe Ann. George was a farmer for most of his life at the family farm in Middletown, Rhode Island. He married only once to Mercy Hopkins. Hiram Harrington's death certificate states that Mercy’s maiden name was Greene but the majority of vital records, including her death record, state her maiden name was Hopkins. An application was made to the Sons of the American Revolution by Hiram’s nephew, Henry F. Anthony, that traced the Hopkins family tree back to his Revolutionary War ancestor. Mercy’s parents were Daniel Hopkins (1777 - October 4, 1877) and Martha Matteson (June 3,1778 – April 2,1848). Mercy A. Hopkins was also been born in Greenwich and had at least one brother, Ezekiel Hopkins (1804- November 23,1860). George and Mercy both passed away in Middletown. George’s cause of death was simply listed as “old age”.

Hiram's sister

Betsey A. Harrington – (1821 - August 28, 1911) Betsey was born in Greenwich, Rhode Island. After marrying William Ellis Gilmore (1824 – 1879), the couple had three children. William was born in Massachusetts and was a music teacher by trade. He had also enlisted during the Civil War where his rank was given as Band Leader. Blanche’s cause of death was listed as Edema of the lungs/old age. Their children were:

1. Jane Amelia Gilmore – (February 3, 1848 – November 3, 1935) born in Rhode Island. Jane never married and was also music teacher like her father. Miss Gilmore was a witness at the trial for Eudora M. Sowle v Sarah L. Harrington. She passed away in a state hospital in San Diego, California after moving there later in life with her brother Frederick. The two lived together all of their lives.

2. Frederick A. Gilmore (August of 1851 – November 19, 1930) Fred also never married. Frederick was as a paymaster for a Lumber company for a number of years. His death records list him as a bank clerk. For whatever reason, Jane and Frederick moved to California later in life. Fred also testified the trial for Eudora M. Sowle.

Hiram C. Harrington – (February 26, 1829 – January 30, 1907) was born in East Greenwich, Rhode Island and spent most of his early life in Rhode Island. In 1849, he struck out to California in search of gold. I found him there in Contra Costa, California in the 1852 State Census. When he returned from California, he lived with his parents and several of his siblings in Newport for a brief period. On January 24, 1854 he married Lurana B. Borden (August 10, 1826 -December 28, 1898) in Fall River, Mass. The couple’s only child, George B. Harrington, was born September 15, 1857. It was also around the time of George’s birth the Harrington family moved to Ferry Street becoming the neighbors of Lurana’s brother Andrew J. Borden and his family. Hiram settled in the occupation of Blacksmith for the remained of his life, with a brief stint as a machinist in Assonet between 1885-1888. Their only son George died of “disease of the brain” on March 4, 1867. A housekeeper/ nurse named Eudora Mable Sowle came to work for them in 1883 when she was just 23 years old. Hiram and Lurana remained at the Ferry Street house for at about 36 years which was long after the Borden’s moved to their infamous murder house on Second Street. In January of 1890 Hiram purchased the blacksmith shop, complete with clientele, of William H. Packard at the corner of Borden and Fourth Streets. Lurana died in 1898 after suffering from a long and painful illness which had led her to undergo multiple surgeries seeking relief. Her official cause of death was given as peritonitis. In February 1901, he purchased a lot of land at the corner of Globe and WIlbur streets with ten tenements to let. Eudora stayed on with Hiram to care for him until his death in 1907. Eudora successfully sued Hiram’s estate seeking reimbursement for her many years of faithful service In January of 1910.

Hiram's brother:

William H. Harrington – (September 15, 1834 - died June 28, 1860) was born in Rhode Island. Outside of the census records, I didn’t find much on William except for a few declarations for Seaman’s Protection Certificates submitted on November 8, 1853 and November 15, 1859. Seamen’s Protection Certificates were documents carried by American seamen as proof of citizenship. There is no evidence that William ever married. He’s buried in the family plot in Middletown with his murdered brother Edward A. Harrington.

Hiram's brother:

Edward A. Harrington – (March 28, 1836 - June 3, 1877) was born in Rhode Island. Edward’s Civil War draft registration records, submitted in 1861, list his occupation as ”Seaman”. I found three Seamen’s Protection Certificates for Edward for the years 1856, 1858, and 1862. He’s shown in census records living with his parents, George and Mercy, at the Middletown farm until 1870. I’m not sure how Edward ended up in Manhattan, New York, but this is where he was murdered in a bar fight in June of 1877. He was a saloon keeper at a place on 135 Suffolk Street in Manhattan. While he was attempting to break up a bar fight a man named Edward G. Otto hit Edward over the head with a “cart rung” which resulted in his death. Newspaper accounts of the murder describe Edward as a former canal boat Captain who was unmarried and childless. Edward A. Harrington was buried with family plot in Middletown. His funeral was attended by a “committee of St. John’s Masonic Lodge Rhode Island.” Eward Otto was tried, found guilty of manslaughter in the first degree, and sentenced to 20 years at hard labor.

Hiram's sister:

Emily Milassa Harrington – (April 14, 1838 – October 15, 1901) was born in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. Emily married Henry Bennett Franklin (November 1. 1835 – January 7, 1908) on July 16, 1857 in Worcester, Massachusetts. The couple had three children. Henry, who was born in Ashford, Connecticut, listed variously his occupation as grocer, meat dealer, or provisions in census records and directories. Both Emily and Henry passed away in Providence. Emily’s cause of death is listed as chronic interstitial nephritis. Their children were:

1.Lena Emily Franklin – (September 25, 1858 -November 11, 1882) Lena never married and lived her entire life in Providence.

2.Clara Isabella Franklin – (July 2, 1860 – February 14, 1946) Clara married James Mitchell Anthony on March 23, 1892. They had two sons, Henry F. and Ralph S. Anthony. Clara’s Aunt, Sarah L. Harrington, is included in their household for the 1915 Rhode Island State Census. Clara is also the informant for Sarah’s death record. It was Henry F. Anthony that made the application to the Sons of the American Revolution.

3.Nellie Irene Franklin – (June 11, 1867 – March 25, 1937) was born in Barrington, Rhode Island. Nellie married Philip Enoch Eddy (August 17, 1869 -December 12, 1932) on October 22, 1891 in Providence. Philip variously listed his occupation as Fruit Dealer and merchant. They had four children – Lena Franklin, Nellie Irene, Philip Franklin and Clarence Franklin Eddy. I guess she really liked using her maiden name for a middle name because she saddled almost of them with it.

Hiram's brother:

George Bailey Harrington (September 15, 1841 – August 20, 1926) was born in Rhode Island. George lived at the farm with his parents until the 1860 census. He enlisted during the Civil War in the 9th Rhode Island Infantry Regiment in Company L. His rank is given as private. His Civil War draft registration lists his occupation as farmer. George married Mary Elizabeth Mitchell (1841 - November 19, 1882) on May 11, 1862 in Newport, and the family grew to include five children. His wife Mary was the daughter of Levi Mitchell and Elizabeth (Sally) Ball. George appears with his servant Elizabeth Ryan in the 1920 census. George and Elizabeth both testified for the trial of Eudora M. Sowle v. Sarah L. Harrington. The children of George and Mary are:

1. Harriet Louisa “Hattie” Harrington – (October 11, 1862-1941) born in Middletown. Hattie married Alvin H. Sprague on November 2, 1892 in New Shoreham, Rhode Island. They had one child, Mary E. Sprague.

2.William Henry Harrington – (June 29, 1866 - 1927)

3. Charles Bailey Harrington – (April 11, 1870 – June 15, 1956) married Nellie Burr Sisson (July 15, 1871 – April 1955).

4. Bessie Anna Harrington – (March 28, 1874 – February 13, 1973) Married Joshua N. Westcott.

5. George Edward Harrington – (July 11, 1878-1879)

Hiram's brother:

Samuel Francis Harrington (May 1842 -November 19, 1911) was born in Newport, Rhode Island. Samuel enlisted during the Civil War in the 1st Regiment, Rhode Island Cavalry. He married his first wife Sophia Marand Lake (1843-1890) on January 23, 1866. The couple had five children before Sophia Harrington died in 1890. Samuel remarried two years later on October 1, 1892 to Mary Elizabeth Underwood. Sam was a farmer all of his life. For a large chunk of that time he worked their farm in Middletown. But, the Harrington family spent a few years in Kansas where his daughter Florence was born. The family appeared in the 1880 census in Solomon, Kansas. Then in 1886, Samuel tried his hand at farming in Prince George County, Maryland. Samuel F. Harrington was a witness at the trial for Eudora Soule. He passed away in Newport in 1911 after only living there for a short time. The cause of death was aortic disease. The children of Samuel and Sophia are:

1. Blanche Verner Harrington (August 20, 1866 – July 15, 1945) Blanche was born in Middletown. Blanche married Joseph Freeborn Manchester (January 24, 1858 – April 25, 1903) in 1885 in and they had two children, Howard Francis and Alice S. Manchester. Blanche and Joseph both passed away in Merced, California.

2. Emily Melissa Harrington (July 20, 1868 - January 7, 1896) Emily was born in Middletown. Emily married Robert Taylor Stanton Allen (1860 – 1894) on July 17, 1886, also in Middletown. They had three children Robert T.S., Lusanna and Sophia M. Allen. Emily Allen passed away in Newport, Rhode Island.

3. Florence Irene Harrington (1874 - ?) Florence was born somewhere in Kansas. There is evidence that her first husband’s last name was Barker. The record for her second marriage to Roscoe Emmerson Simmons lists her as Florence I. Barker. She is also referred to as Florence Barker in Hiram Harrington’s obituary. Roscoe and Florence were married October 9, 1907 in Tiverton, Rhode Island. I was unable to find a death record for Florence.

4. Archibald Sherman Harrington (June 1, 1877 -?) Born in Middletown. I was unable to find very much information on Archie beyond some census records.

5. Mae/May Isabelle Harrington (July 13, 1878 - ?) May was born in Middletown. I also couldn’t find much information beyond a few census records for May. I did find a marriage index record and a mention in the newspaper that claimed Mae married a man named Frank R. Smith from Washington D.C. in May of 1902.

Hiram's Sister:

Sarah Louisa Harrington (January 20, 1845 – December 17, 1916) was born in Rhode MIddletown and she never married. Sarah was the Matron of a Children’s Home in Newport, Rhode Island for several years. During the trial for Eudora M. Sowle, and Sarah gave testimony where she admitted that there had been an estrangement between Hiram and the rest of the family that had “originated when her father’s estate was settled.” Sarah had been the executrix of their father’s estate. Sarah Louisa Harrington passed away in Middletown due to broncho pneumonia with a couple of underlying conditions that contributed to her death.

Overwhelming is the correct term! And this will take some time to study and process.

Initial reaction is that Hiram was a self made man, respected in the community and reasonably kind within his own household. Maybe his post-August 4th interview reflected his honest opinion and were not intended to be vindictive and mean. Perhaps they were spot on from his perspective. Family usually knows family dynamics best.

I believe that one of the addresses for the tenements that Hiram C. Harrington purchased at the corner of Globe and Wilbur streets was 730 Globe. I actually looked at these on google street view from Google Maps and it does sit on the corner of Globe and WIlbur.

Have you thought about contacting an Historical Society and asking if they need research like this donated to an archive? I'm not sure how that works...maybe they only take reference material that contributes to a current project they have. But maybe one would like to start a file on these folks? It just seems such useful information.

I've never thought about that, Kat. I wouldn't know how to go about that either and I'm not sure who would be interested.
