Rebello 12 Ferry & Harrington tidbit

Post by camgarsky4 »

On page 30 of Rebello's book, "Lizzie Borden: Past & Present", he provides the following information and commentary about how the Fall River City Directories reported Hiram Harrington's living location.

The bolding & italics are Rebello's.

Beginning of Rebello---------------------------------------
1887-1889 Removed to Assonet (Freetown), Massachusetts, in 1887. It is interesting that Hiram moved the same year Andrew deeded Emma and Lizzie the Ferry Street property. The property was deeded back to Andrew J. Borden for $1.00 on July 15, 1892. Andrew gave Emma and Lizzie $5,000 for the property.

Note: Andrew J. Borden deeded the Ferry Street property to Emma and Lizzie on October 1, 1887.

-----------------------------------------------end of Rebello.

The Fall River City Directory census data was collected in November & December of the prior year (Nov & Dec 1886). After any last minute edits/updates, directory itself was printed and distributed in Jan/Feb, 1887. Since Andrew deeded the property to the sisters 9-12 months later, on October 1, 1887, Hiram vacating 12 Ferry doesn't seem to be a direct factor on the ownership change.

Also, the Fourth street transaction occurred May, 1887, also after Harrington would have already left 12 Ferry to go to Assonet.

I suspect the only correlation is that 12 Ferry was not occupied by a tenant (aka Hiram) that would have felt awkward that his nieces were his landlord. Otherwise, this highly dramatic real estate transaction would have been even more drama filled!

Of course, Andrew was his landlord up to his departure to Assonet. Based on Hiram's 1892 interviews, I bet that was a harmonious tenant/landlord relationship.
