Today's lucky find for 2 dollars was this night time view which was misfiled under Fairhaven.. Is that the armory tower? The house in the middle sure looks like the Borden's. The way that great old buildings are being knocked down, soon all we'll have are postcards! Am not sure how to make this one larger.

My armory photo from last Friday doesn't show a tower. But what do I know about Fall Rivah. Haaa--ryyyy! Mi-chael!

I just figured out that if you click on the little photo, a bigger one appears- like magic-oooo! Check out that house in the center which from the back looks like 92 Second St. I love this "God's Eye View" and wonder what the moon was like August 4, 1892?

The navy has a site that displays the moon phases from 1800 through 2199.

According to the Evening Standard from "Did She Or Didn't She," Saturday, August 6, 1892, page 5, the full moon would be Monday, August 8, 6:57 pm.

If you examine the top of the tower it has 4 little turrets, one at each corner. To me it looks like the Court House as shown in this photo:

I think you've got it Harry! Here's a good old card of Bedford Street which Mr. Borden would have crossed that morning on his way to the banks. The great heyday of postals was 1903-10 which is only about a decade after the crime so the scenes in the cards are close to the time we care about!

There must be a trick to this picture posting. I do get a larger version when I click on the "thumbs" however. What's the secret?

That's a great card, Shelley.

Most of us post photos by storing them on a free web site like Photobucket. After the photo is uploaded to them, beneath will be a URL image address. All you have to do is copy this address and then paste it into your message and voila the photo appears in your message. It will be the same size as the original. There are some limitations in size listed somewhere on the site. I think it's 250kb but don't quote me.

They don't hassle you with spam and you can store LOTS of photos. If you need help holler up the back stairs.

I picture Emma bustling down Green Street in Fairhaven while visiting the Brownells.

This corner has changed very little- where South Main becomes North Main on the other side of Bedford.

I forget which book says Emma galloped all night long in men's clothing to get to Fall River, then dashed back again to get the telegram from Dr. Bowen. Here's the Route 6 Bridge which I do not think was completed in 1892 for her to charge across- the card is about 1906. What's the scoop on this bridge mb?

This is one of the oldest cards I have of Central Congregational on Rock- note the ivy then and lack of buildings surrounding it.

Just when I thought I'd seen them all and I have over 3,100 images collected over the years.

There's nothing I love more than postcard hunting and find the best buys are to be had out of state on Fall River cards. I am soooo glad I had something fresh to share, Harry. I just know that somewhere out there is an old cabinet card of Lizzie and Emma or maybe Liz and the Fishing Gals in Marion! The hunt is all the fun of course. So it's worth it to squat like a toad in the dust with aching knees to paw through a box of dusty cards. Ya nevah know what will be there! Fairhaven is still beautiful in many parts, although the Green Street house is tired and sagging.

Oh I know about that ferryman-although this is not the River Styxx-in fact, what river IS it?

I see that it is a bit subjective because the site doesn't say the moon is full. It could easily be mistaken for full, just by a picture. I did need to compare before I could tell. That's a great link, Stef, thanks!

Close enough to full for me! Actually I think the "looney" effect is actually on the waxing moon as it approaches total full status, so yep- that's the answer - the whole crowd at #92 was going looneytunes that week. I am planning to run around with a camera this weekend and shoot the same shots from the postcards and make up a power point of then and now. Most cards are about 1906 vintage so it will be 100 years difference which is cool. I am inspired by the many muses residing here!

I agree about the waxing moon. I think the 3 days coming up to full are important, and I know if the sky is somewhat clear, the amount of light is incredible too!
We had discussed the moon's phases before because we wondered what Lizzie could have seen of the *prowler* earlier or the person who seemed to be lurking 'round the house of which Lizzie spoke.

Thanks Shelly. I looked at the cost of housing in Somerset when I was visiting and was surprised at how expensive the area is, Fall RIver, Swansea and Tiverton, RI too.
