This is the place to discuss the city and the locality of the murders and the surrounding area --- both present and past.

The Shadows Have Fallen

Post by Harry »

No trip to Fall River would be complete without a stop at Oak Grove Cemetery. Beside the Bordens it is the burial place for many of the names we all know so well.

At the main entrance on Prospect Street is the beautiful arch

Curving around the arch are raised letters which read:

The Shadows Have Fallen
And They Wait For The Day

Since it is a Christian cemetery I assume it refers to the Resurrection. So far I have not been able to locate the source of the lines.

On the small shield at the top is the year 1873. I think this may be the year the arch was erected as I believe the cemetery predates that.

For those that have access to the old LBQ's the Winter 1995 edition has an article that mentions the arch.
I know I ask perfection of a quite imperfect world
And fool enough to think that's what I'll find

Beautiful clear photo Harry. Yes, the arch was erected in 1873. I also have looked in vain for those lines in verse and I am pretty sure they come from a memorial poem for fallen soldiers after the Civil War-but they sound both ominous and hopeful-depending on your views on the afterlife!
