oh, your so right, it is a shame! I wonder if the inside has been as uncared for as the outside? Do you know what the inside looks like?

Is the Dow House a one family home or has it been torn up inside to make apartments? No, it's not the way it should have been done to preserve it's historical beginnings, but it still will have a chance to be around for another century. It will definately fair better then the Hooper house. The landlord will just bleed it dry, and then, more then likely, tear it down. He/she has no interest in the house except for the money. How sad........keep an eye on the Dow house if you can, I'd like to see how she turns out. Is the front door original or has that been replaced? Merry Christmas to you! By the way.

With the cost of labor/materials, it's no wonder why people are going w/vinyl siding. The cost to upkeep the original exterior is pretty exhuberant. It has to get repainted often, especially due to the weather beating on it.

I have been concerned with the vinyl siding going on right over the rotten wood on the Hooper house. Can you do that sort of thing? I would think the vinyl siding would make a little microenvironment beneath it which would accelerate the rotting process. There are so many Painted Ladies on the Hill with "cosmetic problems"- I was astounded last week to see some which look the worse for wear outside, but look so great inside.

That Rock Street beauty made her Painted Lady debut here on the forum on October 29th- and is one of my favorites. She's worth an encore.

There an even finer photo of the detail on this site, which features some magnificent photos of architecture around the city which has compelled me over the years to seek out the inspiration.

You may want to make a snack and prepare to be at that link site a few hours.
