I have some old British coins from a 1986 trip to Great Britain that I recently found saved in a tin box.
I'm not thinking they are rare- but I am curious to find out what their total US Dollar value is?

I tried Googling, but can't find the info without reading about the history- I only would like a valuation as of, say 01/02/09. I know it fluctuates. Thanks!

The current British pound is worth approx. $1.443. Currently 100 pence = one pound. I don't think they have shillings anymore.

In 1971 they revised their currency. Prior to 1971:

240 pence = one pound
12 pence = one shilling
20 shillings = one pound

You have 3 pounds which = $4.33
113 pence = $1.63
7 shillings = $0.51 (assuming shillings if they still existed were 20 to a pound)

Total is roughly $6.47 at todays rates. However, if the coins are dated pre-1971 they may be worth something else. This is especially true for the shilling.

I checked my foreign coins and among my British ones I have a 1949 half-crown. It's worth "2 shillings, 6 pence" or 30 pence. That's worth about 43 cents at today's rates.

In Dickens' Christmas Carol, Scrooge at the end sends a boy to get a turkey for Bob Cratchit and tells him if he's back quick he'll give him a half-crown. I always wondered what that was worth. Of course the pound had a different exchange rate against the dollar back then.

I thought they were worth more because maybe they were out of circulation. But it sounds like worth more than the old worth of shillings...
