Victorian Asylum for Nervous Women outside Boston

Post by nbcatlover »

Came across this interesting article about the Adams Nervine Asylum in Jamaica Plain from 1887. It seems there was a plethora of nervous women who weren't insane in Massachusetts during the Victorian period.

See the Boston Globe article here:

If it's too long a read for you, go down to the heading At One Fell Swoop about women's lives.

is it the mad pursuit of the “mighty dollar” that makes so many American martyrs to what is known as “nervous prostration.”

This seems to sum up Lizzie's desire for wealth in which she felt she was entitled to. It seems she worked herself into a "frenzy" to get what she wanted, and it worked! Interesting stuff on this site!
