Madeleine Smith

Post by Harry »

Tomorrow, March 25 at 4pm, eastern, on Turner Classic Movies (TCM) there will be a showing of the movie "Madeleine". From the write up on Direct TV:

"Madeleine - Docudrama - Ann Todd, Norman Wooland, Ivan Desny (1950) - Upper class Madeleine Smith stands trial for killing her French lover in Victorian Scotland."

On the IMDb data base: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0042700/

This case is included in a chapter in Pearson's "Murder at Smutty Nose".

Thanks for the tip Harry, will record it on my DVR.
Tried to watch a movie this week call Strait Jacket with Joan Crawford, she kills her husband & his lover with an axe, just couldn't get into it. Maybe I shut it off too early.

According to the chapter in Pearson, Madeleine also attempted to purchase prussic acid. Like the supposed Lizzie she was refused without a doctor's order. This was in 1856. She claimed it was for rats that had infested the gardens on her family's estate. However, she was successful in obtaining arsenic.

Did anyone see the film?
I have probably seen every black and white (talkie) movie ever made so it's possible I did see this 1950 version (I don't recall), but I'm wondering if it was accurate to the story of Madeline Smith.
