Virus alert

Post by Harry »

I susbscribe to the weekly Kim Komando computer newsletter (free BTW). This week's warns of a nasty virus going around:

"HOW NOT TO HAVE A 'MERRY CHRISTMAS'

A new Trojan is going around, under the guise of a holiday greeting.
According to Panda Software, it carries the subject line "Merry
Christmas!"

The attachment includes two files. One is an animated GIF that includes
the phrase "Merry Christmas" and bright lights. The GIF does not infect
the computer. However, the second file, a self-extracting RAR file,
includes the Trojan.

The Trojan sends information about the victim's computer to a remote
server on the Internet. It also attempts to download malicious programs
to the victim computer.

This is all big trouble. Protect yourself. Don't open attachments you
weren't expecting. Update your anti-virus program. And install a good
firewall. ..."

I received two such e-mails today and deleted them without opening them. Didn't even download them actually. Used ePrompter to kill them on my ISP's mailbox. Both had the subject line MERRY CHRISTMAS in capital letters.
I know I ask perfection of a quite imperfect world
And fool enough to think that's what I'll find

Hello trice001, welcome to the forum.

Thank you for the heads-up on that virus. Man, they just don't let up do they?
