If any of you have been following the "Up" series of films about 14 British children who are filmed every seven years, you may be sorry to hear that Lynn Johnson, the children's librarian, passed away in May of 2013 "after a brief illness." I know that she was concerned about some abnormal blood vessels that were discovered in her head many years ago. I don't know if they had anything to do with her death. Hers was the first death among the subjects of the series. She would have been about 57. Her last appearance was in 56 Up.

You're welcome.

Someone that I should have added to this thread is, Robin Williams, who passed away on August 11, 2014, at the age of 63. Apparently he had committed suicide. Robin definitely touched many hearts with his humor, and he was one of the most generous people I know of. His body was cremated and his ashes scattered in San Francisco Bay on August 12, 2014.

Actress Marian Seldes died on October 6.

I met her once at a book signing many years ago. (I cannot emphasize the time enough, for reasons that will shortly be obvious.) I didn't know who she was until she showed me the book she had written. I wince to report that I then said, "Oh, I've heard of you!" She smiled and said, "But of course you've heard of me, darling; how could you not?"

What a terrific career in wonderful films. Why did she stunt double the horseback scenes though? Couldn't Vivien Leigh ride? I know there was a fall from a horse with Scarlett's daughter Bonnie, but I can't remember any dangerous horse stunts for Vivien.

?????? Marian Seldes was born in 1928. She was only 11 when Gone With the Wind came out! You are either mixing her up with someone else or replying to an earlier post.

Curryong, you're thinking of Hazel Warp, who was Vivien Leigh's stunt double in Gone With the Wind. I posted about her death on page 1 of this thread. I don't recall any scenes of Scarlett actually rode a horse. I wonder if the media meant to say the scenes of Scarlett when she rode in a buggy/carriage. I don't know if Vivian knew how to ride a horse or not; maybe she was afraid of horses and refused to be around one. As I recall, all of the scenes where Scarlett was riding in a buggy/carriage were shot close-up showing just Scarlett or Scarlett with another actor/actress; these scenes were shot without showing the horse.

It’s interesting that the Gone With the Wind movie was brought up at this time. December the 15th of 2014, marks the 75th anniversary of the film.

Also, Margaret Mitchell’s novel Gone With the Wind, was published June 30, 1936. So, we missed the 75th anniversary the her novel.

Twinsrwe, Thank you for the link of Julian Lennon and his musical tribute to his mother. It was very nice. (How do you find all these things??)
I didn't know Ann Rule died! I have so many of her books. I wrote her a fan letter once, thinking she is too busy to answer it, and she emailed me right away. I just saw her on tv, I think speaking briefly in an ID channel true crime story. Oh! I think it was a show on the bank robber they called Hollywood. I had read about that case a while back in one of her books.

You’re welcome, augusta. How do I find all of these things? Well, I have MSN as my home page on my browser, which indicates some of them, and every once in a while I’ll do a Google search for Celebrity deaths. I haven’t done a search for awhile, so I just did one and found the following celebrities which need to be added to this thread. (There were several more, which I didn’t add, mainly because they are less known.)

Donna Douglas
The Beverly Hillbillies star, who played Elly May Clampett, died on January 1, 2015, at age 81, from Pancreatic cancer. Her interment was in East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana's Bluff Creek Cemetery.

Bobbie Gentry’s 1967 hit song “Ode to Billie Joe”, which was released in 1967, has always been a favorite of mine. It is such an intriguing, mysterious and eerie song, which leaves you wondering what in the world did Billie Joe and his girlfriend throw off the Tallahatchie Bridge, and why did Billie Joe commit suicide? So, when the film titled, Ode to Billy Joe, came out in 1976, I knew I had to see it. Especially when it was advertised as: “What the song didn’t tell you, the movie will show you”. In this film it is revealed that Billy Joe and Bobby Lee threw

In this film it is revealed that Billy Joe McAllister committed suicide because of his guilt over getting drunk at a party and having a sexual encounter with his sawmill boss, Dewey Barksdal, who was played by James Best. This film also revealed that the object thrown off the bridge was a rag doll owned by Bobby Lee, which is meant to symbolize how she was leaving her childhood innocence behind.

As far as the film version of "Ode to Billie Joe" is concerned (in the film, it's "Billy Joe"), the reason for Billie Joe's suicide is the invention of screenwriter Herman Reicher, who collaborated with Bobbie Gentry. As Gentry said she did not know the reason for the suicide of the person on whom Billie Joe is based, Reicher could invent one. See the articles (on film, song, Gentry and Reicher) in Wikipedia.

I am so sorry to hear of her passing.

Wikipedia has her date of her death as September 19, 2015.

According to Wikipedia, she died two weeks before her 78th birthday. She had been diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer more than six years before her death but kept her illness almost entirely to herself. She reportedly only informed her sister two weeks before she died.

I feel so sorry for Joan; she had such a short time to cope with the fact that her beloved sister had breast cancer until the time she found out about Jackie passing away.

Rest in peace, Jackie.

Kevin Corcoran, died October 6, 2015, of colorectal cancer, in Burbank, CA., at the age of 66.

Kevin's most famous role was Arliss Coates, the youngest son in the 1957 Disney classic "Old Yeller". He also had a regular role on the "Mickey Mouse Club" as Moochie.

Learned about it yesterday. That's a real shock.

Old Yeller has been one of my favorite movies since the first time I saw it. This movie contains such a powerful display of emotions, which touch me deeply inside and stirs my soul. It’s a beautiful, and heartwarming story.

The following information is nothing new, but it is interesting:

Kevin Corcoran and Tommy Kirk played brothers in five films, beginning with 1957's Old Yeller. The other films in this category were The Shaggy Dog (1959), Swiss Family Robinson (1960), Bon Voyage! (1962) and Savage Sam (sequel to Old Yeller, 1963). Fred MacMurray played their father in The Shaggy Dog and Bon Voyage!; Dorothy McGuire played their mother in Old Yeller and Swiss Family Robinson.

Between 1956 and 1960, Kevin Corcoran played several different (but similar) characters, each bearing the nickname Moochie. Although he was never a Mouseketeer. Kevin appeared in a Mouseketeer outfit with the name Moochie across his chest - once. (See the second photo I posted.) In Disneyland: The Fourth Anniversary Show (1957), an episode of the Walt Disney anthology television series, commonly called The Wonderful World of Disney,

I have an adult nephew and niece, who both love dogs. However, they absolutely refuse to watch the Old Yeller movie, because the beloved dog is killed. Even though I have explained to them that you don’t see the actual killing, you just hear the gun going off. Yes, in this film the death of Old Yeller could be looked at as a heartless tragedy, but in real life it is not considered tragic when an animal must be put down in order to end its suffering. As Jim Coates (Fess Parker) explained to Travis: "That was rough.... Thing to do now is try and forget it.... I guess I don't quite mean that. It's not a thing you can forget. Maybe not even a thing you want to forget.... Life's like that sometimes... Now and then for no good reason a man can figure out, life will just haul off and knock him flat, slam him agin' the ground so hard it seems like all his insides is busted. But it's not all like that. A lot of it's mighty fine, and you can't afford to waste the good part frettin' about the bad. That makes it all bad.... Sure, I know - sayin' it's one thing and feelin' it's another. But I'll tell you a trick that's sometimes a big help. When you start lookin' around for something good to take the place of the bad, as a general rule you can find it."

I have also told my nephew and niece that there is a surprise ending to the film that will warm their hearts, but nothing I have said has made any difference. The ironic thing about my nephew and niece is the fact that when they were still living with their parents, they had a couple of dogs that were put down for health reason. I guess, the difference is: death by shooting vs death by taking them to the vet to be put to sleep. Maybe, it’s because my nephew and niece grew up in a small town, where as I grew up on a farm. I learned, at a very early age, that death was a part of life. My siblings and I hunted for deer very year, and my brothers hunted rabbits and squirrels; we also had chickens and pigs, which were killed and used for food.

I do hope that someday my nephew and niece will take the opportunity to watch Old Yeller... But for now, I feel bad for them because they are missing out on such a great classical movie!!!

Oops, here is a death notice we missed!

Ben Cauley, age 67, died on September 21, 2015, at the Methodist South Hospital in Memphis, TN. His cause of death has not yet been released.

Ben was the sole survivor of the 1967 plane crash that killed Otis Redding, four members of The Bar-Kays, a valet and the pilot. The plane crashed into the icy waters of the Squaw Bay area of Lake Monona, in Madison, WI. The deceased were Otis Redding (26), Jimmy King (18), Phalon Jones (19), Ronnie Caldwell (19), Carl Cunningham (18), Matthew Kelly (17) and Richard Fraser (28).

Ben recalls the last conversation that Otis and the Bar-Keys had, in the December 2007 issue of Memphis Magazine, titled, The Day the Music Died:

"We just talked as we always did on the plane," Cauley says, "a lot of jiving going on. We went to sleep for a while, and woke back up. Otis was talking about how he'd just cut a record and said, 'You'll hear it when you get back. We need to put the horns on it, so you'll do that.'"

The record was news to the Bar-Kays, Cauley recalls. "That was the first time we heard about 'Dock of the Bay.' That's the last thing he talked about — how much he loved that record and that it's something he'd wanted to do for a long time."

---

Despite his peace with the tragedy, Cauley says, "An eerie feeling runs across me any time I hear '(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay.'"

I get a chill up my spine, when I listen to "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay", especially when he sings the following verse (Underlining is mine.):

Sittin' here resting my bones
And this loneliness won't leave me alone, listen
Two thousand miles I roam
Just to make this dock my home, now

This verse gets to me, because Otis’ plane crashed in the Squaw Bay area of Lake Monona, in Madison, WI.

One of my FB friends posted on his wall something about Danièle Delorme (9 Octobre 1926 - 17 Octobre 2015).

Hey, MB, glad to see you posting again!

Sorry I missed those two celebrity deaths. I admit, I've been a bit busy this past week. With Christmas now behind us, I've been doing some research on several threads that are being discussed here on the forum.

So, who were the two celebrities who have passed away?

Thanks for posting the names of these 3 people, MB. It’s interesting that Wayne Rogers and Natalie Cole died on the same day; December 31, 2015. Wayne died of complications from pneumonia, at the age of 82, and Natalie Cole died from congestive heart failure, at the age of 65. The celebrity’s death that really hits me hard is Meadowlark Lemon, who died in his sleep, at his home, on December 27, 2015, at the age of 83. No cause has been given.

Meadowlark Lemon was a guy that holds very fond memories from my childhood for me. I remember my father and I watching the Harlem Globetrotters; of course, my father’s favorite basketball player was Meadowlark Lemon, and because of my father saying, “Now watch Meadowlark, number 36.”, this guy became my favorite basketball player as well. Meadowlark was truly a legend in every sense of the word. He had awesome basketball skills, and gave his fans a great deal of joy. He had such charisma and was so entertaining to watch.

Here are some videos that Harlem Globetrotters and Meadowlark Lemon fans may enjoy:

I don't usually post these things, death and all....

But I keep finding them.

Here's another. Some of us grew up with her and remember her fondly.
