Ancestry DNA Test

Post by Aamartin »

Has anyone else done this? It is fascinating and also includes matches of others who did the test. I found some 2nd cousins I knew nothing about!

I want to do it soon. I'm adopted and suspect I've got 1/2 siblings out there, somewhere. I'm curious but not sure I will contact any that I find (opening a can of worms there). So you're European, Scandinavian, and Irish?

I'm currently working on my husband's line and my Mom's (part of them) right now.

I have the kits but lost interest when the FDA ordered 23 and Me to cease and desist sending personal genome reports that included health reports indicating the risk of getting or carrying genetic mutation for diseases such as cystic fibrosis or breast cancer or their response to drug therapies. That's what I paid the $99 per person to get!

Debbie,

I know, right!? I was going to do it through them (wonder if there are any other companies that do it) because I'm adopted and wanted to know if there was any risks that I needed to be aware of. I did make contact again with my BM. But now, I want to know where I came from.

I completed the Ancestry dna test last year, and found only fourth cousins and fit her back.
I uploaded my raw data and put it on genmatch.com.
I really liked the tools on this site.

There are several outfits offering DNA testing. Have any of you gotten tested by more than one? If so, how did the results compare? I'm itching to have my DNA tested, but I'm not sure which company I should choose.

Just took the plunge! I googled DNA testing and found that My Heritage had the best review, so I signed up with them!

I have not joined any of the genealogy sites. My father had two middle names. I have attempted to find my ancestors on his side of the family, several times, but there was not one genealogy site that got his first name correct!

I hope the My Heritage site works well for you, Constantine.

Thanks. I've already gotten a message saying they had some more info for me about my ancestry (at an additional price, of course).

Sent my DNA out several days ago! Can't wait to find out I'm 5% Neanderthal and that I was adopted and am actually Norwegian. (Just kidding (I think).)

I hope your DNA test proves to be all that you thought it would be, Constantine. I did a Google search and was surprised to find that Ancestry.com is not even listed! How odd is that?

I saw an article about the first set of triplets yesterday. I know it's a ballpark sort of thing. Strange that the quadruplets had so much better results with the same company. Mine (MyHeritage) was the one with the best reviews.

I agree, Constantine, it is very strange that the first set of triplets and the quadruplets had such different results. I wonder if the quadruplets had a different level of testing done in order to obtain a more accurate result.

I remember that a company I had been considering had two levels. I had to take two swabs for mine. I wonder if they test for mitochondrial DNA or Y chromosomes (the only ones that can be traced in the female or male lines, respectively). It would also be interesting to try two different companies and see what the differences would be.

I used 23&me for DNA and genetic. I've found lots of cousins but no answers to any closer family members. If your Dad tested, Constantine, you'd get the Y chromosomes, I think, in your file. My father-in-law has done 3 companies.. not too much difference.

My father's been dead for fifteen years. I don't thnk I could dig him up, nor would I want to go to the trouble. I'd have to go to Greece for Y chromosome-carrying relatives. At least one cousin (on my mother's side) has been tested by the same company. She would be a mitochondrial relation.

According to the dnatestingchoice.com web site, the AncestryDNA is listed in 4th place out of 36 sites where a person can get their DNA tested. I think that is a pretty good rating considering how many other sites it is being compared to.

I think it's only just catching on in Europe. Among Europeans who didn't migrate anywhere perhaps we tend to know what to expect. I don't know there's much of a mystery in me & my better half. He's Italian all the way through and all the way back.

You're welcome, Wendy.
No, I haven't had my DNA tested. The more I research the different sites offering DNA testing, the more hesitant I become about getting tested. The following is just my opinion, and I hope it does not discourage anyone from getting their DNA tested:

The identical triplets that I presented above is a real eye opener. Identical triplets come from the same fertilized egg, so how in the world can they possibly have such different DNA results?

Furthermore, according to the web site I provided, listing the 36 DNA testing sites, the waiting periods range from same day to 12 weeks, and the cost ranges from $0.00 to $795.00! :?: :shaking:

Until the test results are much more accurate, I’m afraid I will not be getting my DNA tested.

However, I hope Constantine is very satisfied with the results of his DNA test from MyHeritage. I hope you will feel comfortable letting us know the results of your DNA testing. Who knows, Constantine, your opinion regarding the results you obtain from MyHeritage may influence me to change my mind.

I don't expect to be very surprised. My ancestry is almost certain to be very largely Greek, though I know I had some Italian ancestry. If the story I heard is correct, two of my great-great-great grandparents emigrated from Italy. (This would explain why my grandmother had an Italian surname (Malaspina). That would make me 93.75% Greek and 6.25% Italian. I'm interested in seeing how close the match will be.

My results have come in. No surprises. I'm 88.9% Greek (!!!) and 11.1% "Balkan." (As for the Italian, it's hardly surprising that it didn't show up. The amount of DNA you inherit from a great-great grandparent varies. You could get none at all. And Italians are quite mixed genetically. (There's ancient Roman, Lombard, Greek (!), etc., etc.) What part of Italy you come from would also be a factor.)

I forgot to mention that I received an e-mail with matches to people who could be distant cousins. They came from the U.S., Great Britain, Greece and China. The amount of DNA I had in common with them ranged from .3% to .7%, which I would hardly imagine to be significant.

I'm not sure yet. The company has a website on which you can make out your family tree as far as you know it. So far, I've gotten far more information from that than from the DNA! They keep sending me new info on the relatives (and relatives of relatives) that I've filled in. A lot of this is for people who are not blood relatives, but relatives by marriage. I think I may have to start pruning this info! So far, I'm not getting any information about my ancestry other than what I already knew. I suppose I might have to contact distant relatives in Greece for this. I met a few many years ago, but I haven't been in contact with them since. Anyhow, it's ongoing, so I'll see. It wasn't terribly expensive, though.
