Is it possible...

Post by MysteryReader »

to write a story and put Lizzie Borden and gang (some of the other players from her life) in it, along with Sherlock Holmes? I know I can write and put Sherlock in it because it's public domain ( no one holds a claim on the title or character).

I have been thinking a while about doing something with Sherlock Holmes and just thought of adding Lizzie's story to it. Of course, I probably shouldn't worry about it since I can never seem to fully finish a book and seek out a publisher.

Your thoughts?

I think you have a great idea here, Mystery! Before writing a book, how about testing out your idea here on the forum?

A new Sherlock Holmes series: Sherlock solves Lizzie Borden, Jack the Ripper, Black Dahlia, the Villisca Axe Murders, Keddie murders, Bob Crane, the possibilities are endless.

Thank you Twins and Debbie!

I actually plan for Sherlock to solve Lizzie's case but I haven't figured out who the guilty party is. The thing is, most writers have to be careful that they aren't sued for libel by living members of the person(s) they choose to write about. I don't think there are any living members from the Bordens that would sue for libel. So I'm just planning now, trying to see which way I want it to go. Thanks for the ideas!

You're welcome, Mystery.

I know what you mean about author’s being sued for libel by living members of the person(s) they choose to write about. However, considering the number of books, fiction and non-fiction, there are regarding Lizzie Borden, along with the fictionalized T.V. programs, and re-enactment plays, etc. I’m thinking you would be safe from being sued for libel.

As we know, Sherlock Holmes is a fictional character. So, by using him to solve the case, should indicate that your story is fiction and done for fun. You could even put it in writing that your story is fictional.

IMO, if programs like The Lizzie Borden Chronicles can be shown on the Lifetime channel, where Lizzie kills off half the city of Fall River, without being sued for libel, then you should haven’t any problems presenting your fictional story, here on the forum.

Any thoughts from anyone else?

Thanks, Twins.

That is what I thought (after looking it up). I've got a couple of Sherlock Holmes books on hold at the library so I can try to get into the head of Sherlock without the drugs or nicotine patches.
