The story of the blue lobster reminds me about the one about the Heikegani Crab. The Heikegani crab has a shell that is shaped like a Samurai face. It is believed by some scientists that someone found a one of a kind crab with this facial characteristic and out of respect threw it back. This happened over and over by fisherman who would keep all the crabs they caught but threw the ones that looked like a samurai back into the water. In time they multiplied and their appeared an entire new species of crab known as the Heikegani Crab. Scientists call the process artificial selection.

Thus, if they threw back the blue lobster, there would be a better chance of more blue lobsters in the future. Remove them from their environment and the chances are there will be less.

Wayne Nickerson caught his first rare blue lobster when he was 19 years old. Instead of selling it at that time, Nickerson displayed the blue lobster in a tank at the Manomet lobster pound. Apparently he plans on displaying his second blue lobster at the New England Aquarium in Boston.

However, I agree with you, MB, throw the blue lobster back into the water, so that the chances of it reproducing are greatly increased.

Thank you for reminding us about the Heikegani Crab. I ran across this YouTube video, which shows a live Heikegani Crab. Very cool!
