Irish immigrants did land at Newport, right? Newport was a port in the 1880s?

When Bridget says she landed at Newport the court laughed and 'even the prisoner laughed', according to the newspapers. Even Lizzie Borden laughed. Bridget says she landed at Newport, Adams says 'Why, how is that? Don't you mean New York?', and Bridget amends it by saying she 'changed boats' at New York. Then people laugh.

Can anyone explain why they think this is funny?
I'm looking up Newport and online it says Irish folk were flocking in through Newport...
