What Can A Wreck Reveal?

I found this item just today, and as I was reading it, it struck me that they kept talking about the opium on board. What in the world would they have been doing with it? With all the conversation about opium and cocaine here on the forums recently, after reading this item the quantities of opium mentioned really just stuck with me for some reason. It's an interesting item even without the mention of opium though.

Well I can only think of one thing: Claustrophobia!
They'd have to sedate me to get me to live on one of those things!

Seriously, maybe it was a form of currency?
