Tempting.
While the Parallel Lives in my British Amazon cart recently soared to £9,999.00.

Oh my goodness, Interested, that is a ridiculous price for Parallel Lives!

Re: Ebay offering
Yeah, crackers isn't it. It was £999.00 - I think i mistyped.
One thousand pounds . $1, 459.80, apparently .
This week it's either been bought for a thousand squid, or disappeared.
I think i'll apply all polite & personal to the FRHS, because the sensibly-priced copies they sell via Amazon.com can't be shipped to Europe.
Are copies scarce? Couldn't they... um...just print some more?

Re: Ebay offering
Interested, I think you have a good idea about contacting the FRHS. I bought my copy from the Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast 10 years ago. You may also want to contact mbhenty to see if he may know where you can obtain a copy. I know in the past Stefani has recommended AbeBooks.com: http://tinyurl.com/hkqalov and another place, which I checked out, but they are out of stock.
Yes, copies are scarce. Good luck in finding a reasonably priced copy, that can be shipped to Europe.

Thanks for the help! I'll try the FRHS, and if they still frown on Europeans I'll ask mbhenty, who seems a gallant fellow.

Re: Ebay offering
Yes I-reader:
The Fall River historical Society is still selling copies of their book, Parallel Lives. The cost is 50 dollars. That equates to 35 pounds today.
Sadly the shipping costs are dear.
I have purchased many books from England and had them shipped to the US.
Being a collector of "boys adventure books" from the 1800s, the best copies, and most times the only copy, comes from GB where they were originally sold and published. The most I have ever paid was 35 dollars for shipping....that being a copy of the Boys Own Manual, which is a large and heavy book. But that being so, it is still half the weight of Parallel Lives.
Parallel Lives weighs 7 pounds. It's a heavy, heavy book. I check shipping and it is somewhere around 65 dollars (45 pounds) to 88 dollars (60 pounds) The shipping fee realized is probably closer to 65 dollars.
Check with the FRHS. They ship International, anywhere in the world. Even to Shangdi-la. Yep!
They take paypal, which makes it easy to pay internationally. (not sure if you subscribe to paypal)
You can email them at curator@fallriverhistorical.org and they will be more than happy to tell you what you need to know to purchase a copy.
Good luck, kiddo

....
Brilliant help. Thanks ever so for the mail contact.
I did think it must be the Amazon platform disallowing, & the FRHS itself would be more amenable.
Crazy-random question but in Fall River there's a Jeremiah V. Sullivan Drive which, apparently, is on the south side of Government Center. You wouldn't happen to know who the honoured Jeremiah V. Sullivan might be?
Cheers,
Wendy

Yes Jeremiah V Sullivan:
Good question I-Reader.
No I don't, and apparently no one else does, at least those in my small circle of friends.
Jeremiah V. Sullivan Drive was at one time a portion of Pleasant Street which connects the Flint Village portion of the city with downtown. Pleasant Street had been diverted when the new highway cut through downtown and shortly after that the portion that was separated was named Jeremiah V. Sullivan.
Now I have studied Fall River history for years and have no idea who he is. I have two friends, both who ran for Mayor of Fall River, and even they don't know who Jeremiah is. He may be a veteran from WWII. There is nothing on the web or in past issues of the Fall River Herald News, the town newspaper, about the dedication or changing of the street name that I can find. Very unusual.
Now you have me going and I will need to make a couple of phone calls and do a little investigating.
I did find a record for two Jeremiah V Sullivans in Fall River. One died in 1941. He was a doctor, and the reason why I thought that he may have died in Europe during the war. Then there was another Jeremiah V. Sullivan in Fall River who died in 1977?, He was also a doctor. I also found him listed in the Fall River directory for 1953. Father and son? I don't know. With the extensive reading I have done on Fall River history you would think I knew who these gentlemen were.
Will let you know, though, as soon as I find out.

Re: Ebay offering
The seller claims they were told it was Lizzie Borden, and then states that they have looked at other photos on the internet and found a lot of similarities, but could not locate this particular photo. Really, what similarities??? I know Lizzie has been described as masculine in appearance, but I see nothing in that photo that looks anything close to Lizzie.

Yes Twins:
And they just keep coming. Here's another, listed on eBay as we speak.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Famous-Folk-Leg ... SwGotWpbvw
The seller claims that the photo was purchased from "Lizzie Borden's granddaughter." And they want 6 thousand plus for it.
Soft as a grape.

Re: Ebay offering
Oh my goodness, MB, how can the seller claim this is the real Lizzie Borden? I see there is one person watching this item. I have news for them; this is not Lizzie Borden. The eyebrows, upper eye lids and mouth are not at all the same!
Granddaughter, yeah right! It's obvious the seller doesn't have a clue about the real Lizzie Borden. BTW, is the woman in top picture here suppose to be Lizzie too?

Re: Ebay offering
OK
Very interesting and integral collectable.
This is Lizzie's personal travel guide. Signed by lizzie and embellished with annotations in Lizzie's handwriting. Very cool !!!!
Item was up for bid and just ended today on eBay. (the offer was placed on eBay as a live auction by an auction house) The reason I did not mention it earlier was because I was going to bid on it. I would really have liked to add this to my Borden collection. The reason I did not was because the Fall River Historical Society wanted it and would also be bidding. I didn't want to bid against them. Besides.....when it comes to a 'collector' or an 'historical society' ending up with such an item, the society should end up with it. This way everyone gets to see it once they place it on display.
If not for them this item would have been in my hands.
Congratulation Fall River Historical Society!
Too bad.. I would have really loved to have it.

Re: Ebay offering
Just how cultured was she, is a matter which doesn't get addressed that often. And how long was her group in Paris? is something I must look up. This note of hers against the Luxembourg might reflect disappointment... It's surprising they didn't go. The 'Luxembourg' is a small palace, yes, and it's also the park gardens which surround the building and in 1890, just as it is today, one of the most popular, and lovely, and easily accessible places in Paris. Everyone spends time there, the locals and the tourists. If you live or work anywhere near you tend to gravitate to the Jardins Luxembourg for lunch-break or on the way home. I'm pretty sure the actual building wasn't open to the public in 1890 so either Lizzie didn't know this or it's the Jardins Luxembourg she means.
I wonder if she made more notes in the guide which give us any sense of her cultural awareness. Do we know what she did do in Paris?

Here's an interesting offer on eBay. Four Lizzie books for 12 bucks. Once you include postage it's around 4 dollars a book. The Source Book is just about worth that all by itself.

Well how about that. We have blood stained stocking, bright red shoes and a blood stained mask. Now all we are missing is a blood stained Victorian dress and we have a complete custom for Halloween!

This is an outfit that's all over eBay. Actually a nice outfit. Or perhaps it's the model. Beautiful people can wear anything.
If you click and look at it BIG, you can see blood all over the vest.

Alright! I like it!
Bonus: The outfit even comes with a bloody hatchet! What more can I ask for?
This is a steal of a deal, and it is only going to cost $87.64 (U.S.), plus shipping cost.
MB, did you happen to notice that the shipping location of the mask is Swansea, Massachusetts?

Interesting.... I hadn't noticed. Seller sells all sorts of wacky figurines and masks, including Lizzie's. Or should I say 'not Lizzie, since there is no record of her doing the murders. But an innocent mask with no blood is just not interesting... I suppose.

I know you are right. A mask with no blood on it, just doesn't cut it, but put a bit of blood on it and you have a real winner, especially if you attach the name of Lizzie Borden to it! Yes, Lizzie Borden's name sells anything!

Re: Ebay offering
I think any resemblance is an illusion due to the dress and hair styles being a precise right date for Lizzie, being familiar on Lizzie. The facial features aren't much of a match, are they? And in all Lizzie's photos the apex of her ears - the topmost edge - sits on a level with her brows.
So this came with one of Emma 'in 2013'. Gruesome.

Re: Ebay offering
The seller states that the cabinet card photo is ‘Very Likely of LIZZIE BORDEN’. I'm sure someone will pay a steep price for that photo, not because they believe the woman in the photo is actually Lizzie, but because the seller used her name to sell a photo that is obviously not Lizzie Borden. As you have previously stated, MB, Lizzie's name sells.

The Seller must be pretty thick not to recognise Emily Pankhurst.
It's even identified as Pankhurst on the front.
So the script on the back might be faked. What's the relevance of Asbury Park, does anyone know?

Re: Ebay offering
...I've been looking for another copy of this Emmeline Pankhurst postcard but no luck yet. It's interesting it was produced in the States - Pankhurst did have a strong following among American suffragettes. This particular Aristo logo dates it to 1905 - 1907, according to one online website:
http://www.metropostcard.com/guiderealphoto.html
And 1906 - 1913 according to another:
http://www.playle.com/realphoto/photoall.php
Emmeline Pankhurst first visited the States in 1909 and then again 1911 - 1912. In 1913 it was in Hartford Connecticut that she made the most famous speech of her life - the "Freedom or Death" speech. These are the years when American women would be most likely to have an image of Pankhurst.
So the reverse inscription is odd. Women of the era would very readily identify Pankhurst.

Not only did such a thing never exist, but they have the wrong person on the label.

Re: Ebay offering
So why would Lizzie Borden want to boost her celebrity? It's a really crazy proposition when you think of it.
Postcards were made of celebrities, weren't they. Actors, writers, socialites and so on. And then in the private sphere there were portrait photographs, passed around family and friends.
This is a postcard, a postcard of a notable person. It's not a photograph of any Lizzie taken at any Asbury Park but of Emmeline Pankhurst in a British photographer's studio, an image then published in the States. So you have to wonder if the reverse notation is faked for Ebaying. January 1907 doesn't tally well with Pankhurst's visits to the States because they haven't happened yet, but it's a good date for an 'undivided back' postcard - made obsolete March 1 1907.
All the Seller would claim for it is that it's an RPPC - which is only to disclaim it's an actual photo! See Wiki:
'A real photo postcard (RPPC) is a continuous-tone photographic image printed on postcard stock. The term recognizes a distinction between the real photo process and the lithographic or offset printing processes employed in the manufacture of most postcard images.'
But again, who can imagine Lizzie Borden putting herself on postcards to keep herself famous?

Good point, Wendy. I agree with you. Lizzie being famous stems from a double homicide, which I cannot image anyone would want to be famous for.

The label is a nice Halloween touch, but the effect is lost when they decided to put a false picture of Lizzie on it.mbhenty wrote:Not only did such a thing never exist, but they have the wrong person on the label.

However, the brown glass medicine bottle that the seller is attempting to sell, appears to be authentic.

Asbury Park is a small town in New Jersey, near New York, on the coast and known for its beach. Bruce Springsteen and Danny Devito were born in Asbury Park.

The funny thing is, when I look on Ebay for original Emmeline Pankhurst postcards, they're really expensive! And rare, is my impression. The Seller would do better advertising it for who it really is rather than someone it cannot be .

It's Lizzie on her holidays again, is that the idea?
Do you think this was faked by someone who knows about Lizzie Borden's life? Or was it just a random attempt to make money because Ebay stuff can make crazy money.

You were probably right the first time. It is someone who does not know about Lizzie' Borden's life. We sometimes assume that everyone knows the 'Lizzie story' since we are so interested in it.
I was once standing on the road in beautiful Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, on the street where they filmed the recent Lizzie Borden movie. I started to talk to this young lady who worked in the church across the way. (she must have been nineteen or twenty) I mentioned the movie. She said she remembered them filming a movie, but had no idea what it was about. When I mentioned that it was about Lizzie Borden and the Borden murders, she replied that she had no idea who Lizzie Borden was.
So sometimes we must stand back and give these eBay sellers the benefit of the doubt. Though many times these seller's doubts are dubious or reckless at best.

To be sure, but I just find it a curious thing.mbhenty wrote:

The Seller was undeterred by 'Emmeline P.'. Undeterred by it's not being a photograph. And happy with the idea a reprieved axe-murderess was turning out postcards of herself.

Ah, yes: I just looked over the original eBay sale.
I hadn't noticed that all it mentions on the back of the card is the name 'Lizzie'.
The seller came up with 'Lizzie Borden' on his/her own. That my friend is misleading. Besides, there were thousands of Lizzie's in the world at the time the postcard was issued. Why should it be the one and only 'Lizzie Borden'.
Rethinking the matter I find this seller unscrupulous.

Well, this one appears to be in fairly good condition, but for one thousand plus? I don't think so!
