Interesting (and timely) news brief reporting there was a prowler on Second Street in the days leading up to the murders. This article was published in the August 4th edition, but was written prior to the murders. D.R. Smith pharmacy is one of the places the individual attempted to break-in.
Many of us have discarded Lizzie's claims to have seen a prowler in her yard, yet here is verification that the neighborhood did indeed have someone lurking around just prior to the killings. Two ways to interpret....the neighborhood talk about this prowler could be how Lizzie got the idea or it could be a validation of her claim.
A couple considerations:
Second Street extended for many blocks south of the Borden home.
A Dennis McDermott owned a home on Second St., but a considerable distance from the Borden's.
He also owned a dry goods store on South Main, between the AJ Borden Bldg. & D.R. Smith's place.
A search of the prior week of local newspapers has not unearthed any similar articles.
