The loft of the barn seems an odd place to either store or use an axe.

At that late date, said ax could have easily been a “plant,” especially since there were plenty of those in Fall River who forever doubted Lizzie’s innocence. Speaking of which, I laughed at the piece about her tossing the Temperance Union out of her newly inherited quarters. Doesn’t pay to snub your landlord.
Anyway, I seriously doubt the murder weapon would have been lying around in the barn all those years. Anyway, the point remains that anyone could have put that ax up there. It’s like someone finding a butcher knife in a toolshed at one of O.J. Simpson’s former residences, several years after his death.
The further it’s pondered, this ax biz reeks of a hoax, especially since the article clearly indicates that there had been great interest in the barn’s demolition.
