Dear Readers of Mondo Lizzie,

Recently, I was granted the good fortune of uncovering a previously unseen Andrew Borden portrait. I was amazed that it had gone undiscovered for over 150 years!

The story of how and where the portrait was found will be the feature article in the next issue of The Hatchet: Journal of Lizzie Borden Studies. You can purchase a copy of the magazine as either an online download or a print copy through LuLu.com.

The next issue, with Andrew on the cover, will be published simultaneously online and on LuLu.com on Monday, November 5th, 2007.

Download the Press Release here.

Cheers,
Stefani Koorey, Ph.D.

Here is a peek at the new Andrew Jackson Borden portrait.

SPOOKY SHOWCASE: Lizzie Borden’s Bed and Breakfast owner to be featured on talk show

Lee Ann Wilber appears on “The Montel Williams Show.”

FALL RIVER — On Halloween this year, the legend of Lizzie Borden will be shared with a few million people.
Lizzie Borden’s Bed and Breakfast will shine under a national spotlight Wednesday morning on “The Montel Williams Show.”

Lizzie’s co-owner Lee Ann Wilber will talk about her own paranormal experiences at the home that was the scene of a brutal double murder more than 115 years ago. Williams’ Oct. 31 show is dedicated to haunted houses across the country.

The show, scheduled to air at 10 a.m. on Halloween, will feature such allegedly haunted places as the Hosier’s Restaurant and Carluccio’s Tivoli Gardens of Las Vegas and the Waverly Sanitorium of Louisville, Ky., along with Lizzie Borden’s.

Individuals who care for the haunted places will be interviewed about their experiences, and famed physic Sylvia Browne will also talk about the reported paranormal activity at each site.

Browne will discuss “the unexplainable noises, shadows and voices as well the rearrangement of furniture” that has been known to happen at Lizzie Borden’s, according to a press release from the show.

Wilber’s appearance on the show, taped a week ago, went by like a “blur,” she said.

“We talked about the rocking chair that moves on its own on the third floor or that moves from one side of the room to another,” said Wilber. “I also discussed the moving of shadows in the rooms and an incident when I was making the bed and I suddenly found myself on the floor sobbing.”

Wilber and Lizzie are no strangers to national attention, after filming spots for A&E, the History Channel and “Ghosthunters” in the past few years. But Wilber said “The Montel Williams Show” will strike at the heart of a whole new kind of audience.

“It was nice that I didn’t go looking for them, that they called us. It’s nice to be recognized,” said Wilber.

Tim Weisberg, co-founder of Spooky Southcoast, a weekly paranormal radio show in New Bedford, has spent numerous evenings at the Borden house, and has seen many things that he can’t explain. And each time he and his crew visit, the experiences get more intense.

“We’ve done about four to five investigations there, and the things that happened there started as simple as my legs getting lifted up off the bed but have progressed over time to wrestling with something,” said Weisberg.

Lizzie’s house psychic told Weisberg that he had caught the ire of Lizzie’s father Andrew, and now every time the group travels to the home where Andrew met his end with 10 hacks of an axe to his face, Weisberg begins to taunt him.

“It’s quite the adrenaline rush, and once it happens, you try to aggravate the situation to see if it happens again,” Weisberg said.

But its not only about the Borden murders when it comes to the home being haunted, Weisberg noted. Lizzie’s home is a haven of refuge for a number of spirits unrelated to the 1892 murder.

Michael, a former caretaker at the bed and breakfast who died accidentally a few years ago, is known to haunt the third floor. And two young children who alledgedly drowned in the Bordens’ back yard have also been known to come and go.

Haunted Dimensions Meets Lizzie Borden

housekeim

CGI artist Ray Keim, has a super great site called Haunted Dimensions, where he offers 3-D works of art of haunted mansions, including the Lizzie Borden house at 92 Second Street.

Read all about how he creates his 3-D projects, mansion themed graphics, paper models, and mansion illustrations. Amazing!

He also did the graphics on the Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights! I hate clowns.

On November 17, from 9am until 4pm, the New Bedford Pilots Association to benefit the People Acting in Community Endeavors’ holiday toy drive will be offering 20 minute sightseeing plane rides of local communities. The 12th annual fundraiser at the Nor’East aviation terminal at New Bedford Municipal Airport.

The price is only $20 for adults and $10 for kids.

For information, email Joao Ferreira at jferreira@s-t.com.

Here’s the entire story from South Coast Today.

A chance to see SouthCoast like never before
By Joao Ferreira
Standard-Times staff writer

NEW BEDFORD — On the left, Lakeville is no more than an archipelago of lakes surrounded by fall foliage.

On the right, New Bedford looks like a lizard spread out along the edge of the Acushnet River.

The little Cessna 172 single-engine plane is fast reaching 2,000 feet, and from up here things look a little different.

Everything comes into perspective.

On a clear day, flyers can see the Boston skyline and the mountains of New Hampshire, Cuttyhunk and Martha’s Vineyard, and the vast expanse of the Atlantic.

Passengers almost always use the word “awesome” to describe the view.

“They say it’s awesome. Awesome is the word,” said New Bedford flight instructor Deanna J. King after stepping from the Cessna.

The passengers she’s talking about are the steady stream of kids who turn out for the annual Toy Flights fundraiser held by the New Bedford Pilots Association to benefit the People Acting in Community Endeavors’ holiday toy drive.

The 12th annual fundraiser is being held Nov. 17 at the Nor’East aviation terminal at New Bedford Municipal Airport.

“It’s just fantastic. Kids love it,” Ms. King said. “Yeah, it’s going to be a pretty good event this year. Miss Massachusetts is coming down on Saturday. I think with Miss Massachusetts this year, we’ll get more folks.”

Last year, about 120 passengers turned out for the event and about $2,500 was raised.

This year, for $20 for adults and $10 for children, the pilots association will offer 20-minute to half-hour sightseeing flights over local communities.

Friday afternoon was this reporter’s turn to go on a 30-minute flight to give the reader a preview of what is in store next month.

The route would take us over Dartmouth, Little Compton, R.I., Horseneck Beach and Dartmouth again, then back to New Bedford.

The command tower announces an overcast ceiling of 2,900 feet and a temperature of 57 degrees Fahrenheit as the little Cessna rolls down in a southwest direction on Runway 5.

Soon it is in the air.

“We’ll get a few bumps on the way up. Hopefully it’s going to be smooth when we get to 2,000 feet,” Ms. King says.

It isn’t bumpy.

“That’s (Route) 140 below us. Up there is Lakeville,” she says through the intercom system as the plane makes a turn to the right over a vast expanse of fall foliage cut by Interstate 195.

“Fall River is up there. That is Braga Bridge,” says Ms. King, pointing forward. “You can just make the battleship there to the right of the bridge.”

Ahead, the Spindle City spreads from the Wattupa Pond complex to the Taunton River, with a wide thoroughfare that looks like Pleasant Street lined up with the Cessna.

At this altitude, the plane cruises smoothly.

“Sometimes what we’ll do, we’ll let them take the controls,” says Ms. King, a flight instructor with Atlantic Aviation. “We’re straight up, there’s no safety issues here at all.”

The plane makes a left turn toward Little Compton. Newport, R.I., is seen ahead, as well as the complex of bridges that connect to the island and the Portsmouth Abbey’s famous wind turbine.

“Newport bridge is absolutely beautiful at night,” Ms. King says.

Soon we’re cruising over the half moon-shaped Horseneck Beach. To the left, the houses dot the scenery hugged by forests and surrounded by fields. In the ocean, a few yachts dot the water and seagulls fly around them.

“Not many people on the beach today,” Ms. King quips. “I don’t know if anybody ever told you that there’s a lot of shipwrecks out here.”

The trip is ending, but not before we glimpse an “awesome” bird’s-eye view of UMass Dartmouth, its architecture taking on a new dimension from the air.

The Cessna lines up with Runway 5 again and lands without a hitch.

“So, we do that about 20 times a day,” Ms. King said, half-joking.

I’d do it again.

Despite Friday afternoon’s gloomy weather, Ms. King said this is the best time of the year to fly, because the skies tend to be crystal clear and the air more dense.

The sightseeing flights on Saturday, Nov. 17, start at 9 a.m. and will continue until 4 p.m. The rain date is Nov. 18.

Courthouse Ground Breaking Update

Posted in 6 º of Separation, Are They Crazy?, Borden Buzz, Fall River News, On the Web on October 23rd, 2007 by Stefani Koorey

Well, they went and did it. They actually started the courthouse in Fall River, directly across the street from the Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast. Festivities (?) began yesterday morning and tents were set up for the event.

Here are some photographs of the area, taken last evening by Michael Brimbau. Not much to look at yet, but this is where it starts.

(now remember, this is Fall River, and they haven’t yet planned out where to put the parking! Not kidding!)

New Lizzie Borden B&B Website

Posted in Book and Media Reviews, Borden Buzz, Lizzie Web Images, On the Web, Unabashed Self-Promotion on October 19th, 2007 by Stefani Koorey

Take a gander at the new look of the Lizzie Borden B&B website. I think it is much improved over the last one. I hate web sites and blogs that have music on them that turn on just by clicking on them.

B&B

This site was designed by Richard Behrens, filmmaker, author, and web designer. Here is a sample of his work: Cy Walter.com. Richard’s film company is Garden Bay Films. Richard is also a member of the Lizzie Borden Society Forum.

I also did some design work for the site, contributing the banner and a few other special do dodads.

Be sure to keep returning for new content.

Halloween Secret Spaces and Lizzie Borden

Posted in 6 º of Separation, Borden Buzz, On the Web, Scary Lizzie on October 16th, 2007 by Stefani Koorey

Boston.com ran an online photo essay detailing a whole slew of what they called “Halloween Secret Spaces.” There are several dozen images offering details of many out of way and obscure scary places one can visit this Halloween season. Very kewl!

I bet you thought that they would include the Lizzie Borden B&B on that list? Well, you would be incorrect. Instead, their Lizzie Borden offering is the Pine Ridge Cemetery in Dedham, Massachusetts. That is where Lizzie buried her pets, Donald Stuart, Royal Nelson and Laddie Miller.

This is the same cemetery where Admiral Richard Byrd’s dog Igloo is also resting.

Buried in Lizzie Borden’s pet cemetery
See which family members Lizzie Borden buried! No, not her parents. Fall River’s famous acquitted child buried her three dogs at Pine Ridge Pet Cemetery in Dedham, with a tombstone that is an exact replica of her parents’ tombstone in Fall River. The pets’ tombstone inscription reads: “Sleeping Awhile.”
