Modern Forensics and the Lizzie Borden Case

This clip is from the Discovery Channel’s 2004 documentary titled “Lizzie Borden Had an Axe.” In this short piece, Professor Thomas Mauriello and Detective Tom Lange (of OJ Simpson fame) examine the handleless hatchet and Abby’s scarf.

This video is meant as a tandem to the outstanding essay by Kat Koorey in the latest issue of The Hatchet. The article fully examines the history of Abby’s scarf and traces it from first mention to its current location. It is a remarkable piece of journalism and highly recommended! It is titled, “On the Trail of the Bloody Handkerchief.”

  1. Richard Says:

If hatchets such as the one found in the Borden cellar were relatively standard in size and weight, fitting this blade to the cut in the scarf is intereting but not necessarily conclusive. When they fit the blade to the hole in the scarf, the scarf is laid out flat, whereas on Abby’s head it would have been rounded out. I can imagine that the differences between the two would have been minute but this documantary sounds so conclusive that the blade has been linked to the scarf beyond a shadow of a doubt.

And what’s up with that narrator? Isn’t he some voice over guy from the 60s and 70s who did Hanna Barbara cartoons and Disney movies? Such a distinct voice. I remember that voice being on my Haunted Mansion LP record in 1974. In fact, he may be the guy who does the taped voice for the Haunted Mansion to this day.
