Fall River —
The famed Abbey Grill appears to be in hot water as the bank holding its mortgage has announced the building at 100 Rock St. will be auctioned off.

According to a legal notice placed in Thursday’s Herald News, the majestic Rock Street building is being foreclosed on due to a “breach of the conditions” regarding the building’s mortgage, held by Millennium bcpbank.

The notice indicates an auction of the building will take place at 11 a.m. on March 26.

A woman who answered the phone at the International Institute of Culinary Arts — the teaching school owned by Abbey Grill operator George Karousos — Thursday said Karousos was meeting with attorneys regarding the foreclosure notice. She said staff at the facility had just learned of the potential foreclosure earlier in the day when someone presented the notice to Karousos during a class.

Karousos did not return a message seeking comment and calls made to his home went unanswered.

Huge Success for Ken Champlin and the Fall River History Club

Posted in Fall River News, Off Topic on February 18th, 2009 by Stefani Koorey

The Fall River History Club’s guest speaker tonight was Fall River historian Ken Champlin. He gave a totally fascinating talk on his recent discoveries on the Fisk family and the underground railroad in the city.

We had our largest audience to date: 50 folks, who came out to the library in a snowstorm to hear Ken speak. A lively discussion followed the talk and many people stayed around afterwards to chat and discuss their interests.

Thank you Ken for the most informative and enlightening talk!

Next month, on the 18th of March, we will hear George Peltier discuss the history of the trolly in Fall River. I can’t wait!

Fall River History Club

Posted in Book and Media Reviews, Lizzie 4 Sale on February 6th, 2009 by Stefani Koorey

The next meeting of the Fall River History Club will be Wednesday, February 18th at 6:30 in the Fall River Public Library. Ken Champlin will speak on recent research that he has conducted that sheds new light on the Underground Railroad in Fall River. It should be an excellent presentation.

Related to that, the Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities will be sponsoring a seminar titled “Traces of the Trade: Massachusetts and the Economy of Slavery,” to be held on Thursday, February 12th at 6:30 pm (reception at 6:00) at the New Bedford Whaling Museum.

A personal request: Al Lima, co-founder of the Fall River History Club is conducting an oral history initiative, focusing on persons who were raised in Fall River in the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s. His hope is to write a book about growing up in the city. If any of you know of any older person who would like to be interviewed for this project, we would appreciate your assistance.
