A Good Cause and Laura Monteiro
The author of the blog New England Bites, the go-to place online for SouthCoast Massachusetts and Rhode Island food reviews and recommendations about where to spend your food dollars, has penned a new book that is well worth your attention.
It is called Mariah Makes a Friend. It is written by Laura and illustrated by Evan M. Turick. All proceeds from this book will go to support cats and their care at Habitat for Cats in Westport and New Bedford, MA.
Here’s a bit from the press release, which I quote only because it really says it all!
“Habitat for Cats, an all-volunteer, 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in Westport and New Bedford has released their first book, Mariah Makes a Friend. Written and illustrated by two volunteers, Laura Monteiro and Evan Turick, Mariah Makes a Friend is a fun story for children based on the 40+ residents at the Habitat for Cats private outdoor sanctuary in Westport. The story is about Mariah, a shy cat that arrives at the sanctuary and is scared to make friends. The sanctuary is a place where feral and older cats that have become unadoptable for a variety of different reasons can live out their days surrounded by food, shelter, toys, feline friends, and over 20 volunteers willing to take care of them.
“All proceeds from Mariah Makes a Friend will go to support the cats and their care. Along with the cats at the sanctuary, the Habitat for Cats organization works to aid cats in adoption and the TNR (trap/neuter/return) programs. With our adoption program, cats are fostered by caring volunteers and “shown†at our bi-monthly adoption days at the clinic at 1322 Ashley Blvd. When the cats are feral and cannot be adopted, HFC implements the TNR program. They catch the cats, spay or neuter them, and then release them back into their cat colonies. HFC does this to prevent kittens from being born into a world where the cat population is already out of control.
“Laura Monteiro is a 33 year old resident of Fall River and this is her first novel. She is a graduate of Bristol Community College and works as a news clerk/correspondent for SouthCoast Media Group in New Bedford. Evan Turick is a 16 year old resident of Westport and will use this book as part of his college application to major in art or engineering. Turick’s mother, sister and father (also volunteers of the sanctuary) assisted in the making of this book. Habitat for Cats was established in 1997.
