Dr. Philip Silvia, the author of the seminal collected work of Fall River history as seen through its newspapers, is being honored with a lifetime faculty research award at his university, Bridgewater State College.

Siliva edited the three volume set, which was published in different years: Victorian Vistas: Fall River, 1865-1885 as Viewed Through Its Newspaper Accounts was published in 1987; Victorian Vistas: Fall River, 1886-1900 was published in 1988; and Victorian Vistas: Fall River 1901-1911 was published in 1992.

It is rather difficult to get all three volumes in one set, and individual copies sell for anything from $90 to $375. The most sought after volume is, of course, the middle one, which contains information regarding the Lizzie Borden case.

If you are interested in them, try to purchase them with dust jackets in tact. The value of the set is only enhanced by these.

Paranormal Investigators of Southern Arizona

Last night PISA, the Paranormal Investigators of Southern Arizona, had a blog radio show interviewing Richard Senate about his new book on Lizzie Borden, Shocking Psychic Solutions: The Lizzie Borden Case.

Senate played the “Andrew was a mean old man” card, and characterized Abby as unintelligent, without friends, and a sad woman. I think at one point he even says that Abby and Andrew slept in separate bedrooms. He made many mistakes in his assumptions of the people and the circumstances surrounding the case. He says he has been studying the Borden murders since 1997.

You may notice a strange telling of Emma’s whereabouts during the crime and her return to Fall River that evening. I can’t tell where he gets his ideas from, but he does say the trial transcript is available for free from the “state of Massachusetts.” Well, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts does not provide this document, I do, and was the first to do so online at LizzieAndrewBorden.com. I am assuming he got the transcript from my site, but he does not cite it in his book.

You can listen to the entire show here:

Paranormal Investigators of Southern Arizona
The Paranormal Investigators of Southern Arizona (P.I.S.A.) are a team of paranormal investigators aimed to assist anyone who may have paranormal activities in their residence or business. Our goal is to help our clients deal with the issues surrounded by living with a haunting, including educating about the paranormal and using certain techniques to ease the psychological impact of living with a ghost. P.I.S.A. blends scientific investigative procedures with a new age approach. We believe that the feelings and impressions that make up a haunting are just as important as the documented evidence from our professional equipment. For the person dealing with a haunting, on an everyday basis, all they have is their impression of their experiences . It is important for us to understand both aspects of the investigation, including these experiences. For this purpose, some of our members are “psychic sensitive” as well as trained to use our professional field equipment. P.I.S.A. investigates through skeptical eyes. We believe that many “paranormal” experience can be “debunked” through practical deduction. We also understand that if one does live in a haunted environment, it can cause anxiety and other psychological issues. In the event, that we find proof that a house or business is haunted, we make every effort to make sure that our clients are armed with knowledge and coping techniques.

New Lizzie Book

holba

Hatchet author Annette Holba, Ph.D. has a new book out titled Lizzie Borden Took an Axe, or Did She? A Rhetorical Inquiry. I am super excited by this publication! Here is what the amazon site has to say about the book:

We’ve heard the rhyme: Lizzie Borden took an axe, And gave her mother forty whacks, When she saw what she had done, She gave her father forty-one. But what do we really know about this infamous case of murder that occurred over one hundred years ago? Lizzie Borden Took an Axe, or Did She? is a collection of essays, written by a teacher-scholar (and a former Prosecutor’s Detective), that that explore various interesting questions that have virtually remained unexplained for over one hundred years. What was Lizzie Borden’s sexual orientation? Why did Lizzie Borden change her name after her public acquittal? What is the value of Edwin Porter’s The Fall River Tragedy then and now? What role did media and gender play in this public spectacle? What was the relationship between John Morse and Bridget Sullivan? These and other questions are explored through rhetorical, narrative, and common sense theories to help us critically engage this captivating case. Whether you are reading this book for a class or reading it for fun outside of an academic setting, this book was written to engage the story of Lizzie Andrew Borden from refreshing new perspectives.

The Preliminary Hearing in the Lizzie Borden Case

Posted in Book and Media Reviews, Borden Buzz, Case Related, On the Web, Unabashed Self-Promotion on June 22nd, 2008 by Stefani Koorey

prelim

The Preliminary Hearing in the Lizzie Borden Case (PearTree Press, 2005), by Harry Widdows, Stefani Koorey, Ph.D., and Kat Koorey, is now available for sale through the Fall River Historical Society.

You can purchase it when you visit or by phone at 508-679-1071.

From the Foreword:

The Preliminary Hearing phase of the Commonwealth vs. Lizzie A. Borden began on Thursday, August 25 and lasted seven days, through Thursday, September 1, 1892. The judge who presided over this “probable cause hearing” was Josiah Coleman Blaisdell, the same judge that had officiated at the Inquest into the deaths of Andrew J. and Abby Borden.

The court stenographer, Miss Annie White, made only two copies of her report of the hearing; one was given to Hosea M. Knowlton, for the prosecution, and the other to Andrew J. Jennings, for the defense. This latter copy is the only one known to have survived. It has recently been discovered that this copy, one that we have all come to know as the official copy of the proceeding, is, in fact, both incomplete and inaccurate in regards to the order of witnesses, having been altered and edited for some long-forgotten reason. According to painstaking research by the editor of the Lizzie Borden Quarterly, Maynard F. Bertolet, there are major discrepancies between the order of the pages in the Preliminary Hearing and the events as they actually occurred.

Much to the chagrin and frustration of those who study the primary documents in the Borden case, the Jennings’s copy of the preliminary trial transcript is missing several rather important items, including the testimony of Thomas Keiran and Annie White, the reading of the Lizzie Borden inquest testimony by Mr. Knowlton, and all events from the seventh and final day of the trial—defense arguments, prosecution arguments, Judge Blaisdell’s summation, and the verdict.

This version of the Preliminary Hearing is unique. It combines a number of transcriptions from various sources in an effort to reproduce, as accurately and authentically as possible, the day-by-day proceedings of this all-important legal event in the history of the Borden murders of 1892. Since the Jennings copy has sections out of sequence, as well as an error in numbering where the text jumps from page 34 to 45, this new print version has sought to rectify these discrepancies in the interest of providing researchers with a readable copy.

The Devena Theatre Company is once again presenting Lizzie Borden and the 40 Whacks at a library in Massachusetts. Mark your calendars. The performance is scheduled for Wednesday, June 4, at the Robbins Melorial Library in Arlington, MA.

ARLINGTON, MASS. -
The Devena Theatre Company will be presenting “Lizzie Borden and the 40 Whacks” at the Robbins Memorial Library, 700 Mass. Ave. on Wednesday, June 4, at 7 p.m.

An edutainment production, written by Fran Baron and directed by Joseph Zamparelli, Jr., will feature both Lynne Moulton and Joseph Zamparelli, Jr. in multiple roles depicting the story of the infamous Fall River native, Lizzie Borden, who was acquitted of the ax murders of her parents in August of 1892. The audience will have the opportunity to participate in the production by way of a mock trial with the ability to question Lizzie, decide if she is innocent or guilty and agree on a sentence if necessary. Will history repeat itself or will the audience feel differently in 2008?

Lynne Moulton has performed several roles for Delvena Theatre including her IRNE nominated Martha in “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” and “Sissy in Piece of My Heart” and also for numerous other theatre companies in the New England area. She received her acting training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art under the direction of Sir Robert Palmer and at Trinity Rep Conservatory.

Joseph Zamparelli, Jr., is a professional actor, director and producer. A graduate of Boston College (Psychology/Theater Arts) he went on to the professional training program at Circle in the Square Theater School in NYC. In addition to commercial film and television work, he is producing/artistic director of BostonAlive.

The Delvena Theatre Company was founded in 1992 and has performed at various venues, most often at the Boston Center for the Arts. The company was nominated for five Independent Reviewers of New England awards. Its production of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” was on Theatre Mirror’s best list for acting, directing and production. Presentations of “Anna Weiss” and “Beyond Therapy” were included on Theatre Mirror’s best play list and “Blue Heart” was placed on Aisle Say’s best list.

Lizzie Borden and the 40 Whacks is offered free to the public and is supported in part by a grant from the Arlington Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency and The Friends of the Robbins Memorial Library. It is recommended for ages 12 and older. For more information, contact the library at 781-316-3200.

    Evan Hunter on Lizzie Borden

Posted in Book and Media Reviews, Borden Buzz, Case Related, On the Web, Unabashed Self-Promotion on May 7th, 2008 by Stefani Koorey

When I interviewed the late Evan Hunter (aka Ed McBain) for LizzieAndrewBorden.com, I found him gracious and entirely accessible. I simply emailed him and asked for his thoughts and he wrote me right back and was perfectly wonderful in giving me his full attention. The interview I did with him is still online here.

A video interview with Hunter regarding his book about Lizzie Borden was placed on YouTube recently. Enjoy!
