Lizzie Borden for Sale on Ebay!

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

I have seen it all—portraits of women being passed off as Lizzie Borden who obviously are NOT Lizzie Borden. They have been advertised for years and I have quite a collection.

Today, on eBay, is the best of the worst. Here is what this person considers to be Lizzie Borden AND her father Andrew.

“Infamous” accused axe murderer “Lizzie Borden” EXTREMELY RARE Studio Portrait Just found and identified is what we have to offer you.

Stuck to the back of the cardboard matting of her portrait was another portrait from the same studio with identical cardboard matting. We believe this to be her father “Andrew Borden” whom Lizzie was accused of murdering alongside her mother as well. She was subsequently acquitted of both murders and till this day remains one of the most infamous and hanous homicides in American History.

THE STUDIO PORTRAIT OF THE “INFAMOUS” LIZZIE BORDEN WAS DISCOVERED ATTACHED TO WITH WHAT WE BELIEVE IS TO BE AN EARLY PORTRAIT OF HER FATHER.

And yours for a starting bid of $2,800!

Oh, and note how the photos were taken in Germany. Perhaps they have a Lizzie and Andrew Borden there too!

Lizzie Borden Owned Items for Sale?

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

A few new auction items caught my eye today. They are being sold on eBay as a LiveAuction, which means you have to register for the sales through the auction house that is selling the items.

There is one really cool item and the rest are without provenance, and therefore probably hooey.

Up for your consideration:

1. The Bloody Clock. This item appeared for sale many years ago with the bold assertion that this ceramic timepiece was on the Borden mantle at 92 Second Street on that fateful day in August of 1892. The red stuff on the clock is the blood of Andrew Borden that spattered there as he was murdered. If you believe this, please, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz?

clock

Lizzie Borden: A Mantle Clock Purportedly from the Murder Room, with Red Spatters Said to be the Blood of the Victims. By oral tradition this clock was obtained from the Fall River Police Department many years ago. A label on the inside, which would appear to date from c. 1930-1950, carries the handwritten notation: “Clock from the famous Lizzie Borden estate after the trial in 1892. The blood spots never left.” To the consignor’s knowledge, the blood deposits have never been analyzed in a laboratory.

The clock itself is a hollow, glazed ceramic piece, height 13.5″, with no maker’s markings. However, the style appears consistent with that era. The sketchy provenance requires a bit of a leap of faith, but if it can be matched to a crime scene photo, or if a laboratory analysis confirms the blood spatter, the purchaser may claim a real coup!

Starting bid: $500

2. Lizzie’s Kitchen Stuff. This lot has also been up for sale previously. They state the items were from Maplecroft, Lizzie’s home on the hill. However, there is zero provenance on these pieces, and instead, some sort of surety that you can trust they are what they say they are. Buyer beware!
pots

Lizzie Borden: Three Items Owned by Borden or her Family.
(1) A bucket-sized brass or copper dough maker which was found in Lizzie Borden’s home, Maplecroft, where she resided from 1893 through 1927.
(2) An ice pick found in the home during its 1995 renovation.
(3) A silver plated child’s cup engraved with the name “Emma.” Emma was Lizzie’s elder sister who lived with her from 1893 through 1905.

All three items were displayed in the now-closed Lizzie Borden Museum in her former home, and come with signed certificates of authenticity from George E. Quigley, president of the International Lizzie Borden Association and a former curator of the museum.

Starting bid: $500

3. The Jury. Now here we have something of true value and importance. A very large glass plate photograph of the Borden Jury! Very cool!

lf-1

Lizzie Borden’s Jury of 1893: Mammoth Plate Photograph, image measures 16.50″ x 11.75″, in a period gilt frame 26.75″ x 22.50″. Lizzie Borden’s jurors posed in this photograph, taken by O’Neil, New Bedford (Ma.) bottom right lower corner. These are the twelve jurors that were chosen of the 145 polled. They tried and acquitted her for the axe murders of her farther and step-mother in 1892 in Fall River, Massachusetts. Although Lizzie Borden was acquitted, she was widely believed to be guilty; no one else was ever arrested or tried for the murders. Borden died in 1927. These huge photos were reportedly distributed to the jurors and key trial participants, and of course, are quite rare. But the image itself is an iconic one, reproduced in many printed accounts of this bizarre affair.

Starting bid: $600

Lizzie Borden B&B Auction

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

Bordenhouse

The Lizzie Borden B&B is once again holding an eBay auction for a stay in the Morse room (the room where Abby Borden was murdered) for August 4, 2008. The Fall River Herald recently ran a piece on the internet sale. The piece is by Deborah Allard.

Here is a link to the eBay sale. As of today, the highest bid was $275. With only four days to go.

Something had to mark the anniversary of Lizzie Borden’s death on June 1. She died at home at her Maplecroft mansion 81 years ago in 1927. She was 66.

The Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast decided it would put a night in its John Morse room up for bid on eBay. And, it’s not just any night; it is the night, and there is never a vacancy. The lucky bidder will spend the night of the gruesome murders in the room where Abby Borden was found face down in a pool of blood on Aug. 4, 1892.

Andrew was found downstairs, dead on the parlor sofa. His blood had seeped down to the basement.
Who would want to spend such a night, or any night, in the Borden house?

Let the bidding begin.

“It’s sitting at $275,” said Lee Ann Wilber, house manager.

Last year, the room went to Don Sykes of Pennsylvania, who bid just under $1,000. Sykes, a Borden buff visited the B&B again just two weeks ago.

“Everyone waited (to bid) until the last day last year,” Wilber said. “The last half-hour, it went up $500.”

Wilber started the auction last year because she had so many calls from people wanting to book the room on the murder night, that she thought the fairest way of handling it was to give it to the highest bidder.

Ghost of Lizzie Borden Doll

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

There is a new item up for bid on eBay that has a few problems. No disrespect to the artist, whom I am sure was trying to do her best—but the creator of this Lizzie Borden doll apparently used a photo to help her detail the face that is not Lizzie Borden, but the now infamous “man-hands” Lizzie. It is a shame that she created it from this photo, especially since the artist is asking for a starting bid of $750 for her work.

She did a very good job of reproducing the face in the photo. Too bad the face is not that of Lizzie Borden. Lizzie’s nose is much more narrow and petite.

Link to sale on eBay.

LIZZIE IS A ONE OF A KIND 43″ TALL LIMITED EDITION ARTIST DOLL. PORCELAIN HEAD, UPPER TORSO AND LOWER LIMBS. PIERCING GLASS EYES. CUSTOM CLOTHING INCLUDES ANTIQUE SHOES, UNDERDRESS AND HAT. SHE HOLDS AND ACTUAL VINTAGE MINIATURE AXE AND BLOODY DRESS. WOOD STAND IS INCLUDED.

Haunted Lizzie Borden Purse Redux

Saturday, March 8th, 2008

purse

The owner of the “haunted Lizzie Borden purse” is offering it for sale once again on eBay. This time it has a starting bid of $299 and a $16 shipping fee.

You might not find it on your own, however. The seller spells Lizzie’s name “Lizzy Borden” throughout the auction description.

This purse was given to my great Grand Mother by Lizzy Borden. The purse is Hunted!

When my great grandmother came to this country she came from New York to RI to Boston to Maine and finally back to Boston and she spent some time in RI where Lizzy Borden’s Father took pity on her and employed her for a while to do some sewing in exchange for room and board,. Lizzy Borden befriended my Great Grand Mother and when she left Lizzy gave her some money and her purse, I was told by my Mother that my Great Grand mother and Lizzy stayed in touch for many years. The story of the purse was told to me by my Mother and the purse was shown and the story retold time and again to people in my house as I was growing up in East Boston. When my mother passed on I receive the purse it had in it 2 coins a 1890 silver Dollar and a 1853 Penny I had an antique dealer look at the purse and it was worth about 300. At that time not including the coins, I am sure they have some value also. I must also mention again that this purse is ( no lie ), Extremely Haunted. And I must part with it for this reason. I also have a photograph that my Mother had placed with the purse, it is not for sale but I will post it for those that are interested I believe that this picture is of Lizzy in her later years.

As for shipping I am still new at E-bay and I believe that the shipping cost is in the range of 5. to 16. dollars I may be wrong. If pures is sold we will make arrangements for shipping and insurance.

Seller also claims that this is a photo of Lizzie in her later years. (note: it is not)

Haunted Lizzie Borden Purse Appears Again

Saturday, October 6th, 2007

hauntedpurse

It didn’t sell on eBay the first time because people saw it for what it was. Now it is for sale again. And the seller really wants to get rid of it, they say, but hasn’t lowered the price of $350. Alas.

You too can have bad luck if you buy this purse. And not from any curse on the purse, but by the reduction of your bank account for purchasing it!

Freaky things happen with this purse….Must Sell!!! Please!!!!!!!!!!!!

As told to me by my mother, this purse was given to my great grandmother by Lizzie Borden.

My great grandmother immigrated from Italy via New York. Her journey to Boston/Maine led her to Fall River/New Bedford area, where she worked for Lizzie Borden doing laundry and sewing for a few weeks. Upon her departure Lizzie Borden gave my great grandmother this purse which has been handed down from generations.

Inside this purse were 2 coins : a silver dollar dated 1890 and a one cent penny dated 1853.

The purse is in immaculate condition as well as the coins. Black sequence with (I believe )is a silver base.

The problem with this beautiful purse is that when it is taken out of storage, strange things happen to the people and those around them that have handled it. We have had strange sensations of being watched, touched, strange sounds, shadowy figures as well as weird feelings, especially when alone. Circumstances seem to occur- that things even break.

We just no longer want this in our house. The purse itself is of real antique value, but the paranormal activities makes this purse more interesting in value.

Man Hands Lizzie

Friday, September 7th, 2007

It all started when DAN DUNN COLLECTIBLES of Buzzards Bay, MA (capecollector on eBay) labeled this person as Lizzie Borden. Since then, this person has appeared in YouTube movies, on eBay, websites, and goodness knows where else!

Please be aware that experts agree that this woman is not the accused hatchet murderess. The Fall River Historical Society also has added their nay to this image. So don’t be fooled. It ain’t her. It is so not her that this image has been nicknamed “man hands Lizzie”—the real Lizzie Borden is much more attractive (see below). Don’t you agree?

Fall River Sign Sells Big

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

An auction on eBay recently exceeded its estimates. It was for an original advertising sign for the Fall River Line.

Fall River Line material usually brings in the bucks, as you have a mixed bag of collectors: Fall River Line, transportation, Fall River, 19th Century, etc. This item was an unusual piece and in very good shape considering its age. It was estimated to bring in $500 and pulled in double that. If I were a rich man . . . .

fallriverline

Another Fall River line item on sale now that caught my eye is this very good condition copy of the sheet music for the song “On the Old Fall River Line.” Now there is a song that can get into your head and torture you by not letting you go!

Wanna hear it? Listen here. And don’t say I didn’t warn you!!

NEWS: Outbreak of Lizzie Haunting her Pocketbooks

Sunday, January 21st, 2007

A new, yes new, haunted purse, supposedly belonging to Lizzie Borden is on sale on eBay.

A VERY FAMOUS NEW ENGLAND MURDER, ! HE SAID THAT HIS GRANDFATHER AND HER FATHER ANDREW ,WERE FRIENDS, THEY WERE A WEALTHY FAMILY, AND I WAS TOLD IT WAS LOANED , TO ONE OF THE RELATIVES FOR AN OUTING, AND NEVER RETURNED, BECAUSE THERE WAS NO CONTACT AGAIN AFTER THE BRUTAL MURDERS,AND PUBLICITY, OF ONE OF THE MOST HORRIFIC , COLD BLOODED MURDERS IN ALL OF AMERICAN HISTORY,WHEN HE DECIDED TO SELL IT, THIS MAN WAS IN HIS LATE 80S. AND WHEN I PICKED IT UP HE TOLD ME THAT HIS WIFE DIDNT WANT IT NEAR HER ,GRANDCHILDREN, AND ASK HIM TO TAKE IT OUT OF THE FAMILY HOME! LIZZIE WAS SAID TO BE SEEN IN THE EARLY DAYS, ON OCASSION CARRING THIS PURSE DAILY TO AND FROM THE BANK IN TH MORNINGS , PERHAPS RUNNUNG ERRANDS FOR HER FATHER!IT BEING A PART OF HISTORY, IS ENOUGH BUT I HAVE SEEN THE GHOST OF LIZZIE BORDEN WHEN I HAVE BEEN ALONE IN MY ROOM , SHE IS CRAZED LOOKING, AND I HAVE SEEN HER MANY TIMES, STANDING THERE WITH HER AX, AND ALL FULL OF BLOOD! Starting bid? only $29.00.

Now the stranger part of this story is that not one month ago on eBay was yet another haunted Lizzie Borden purse. They were asking $500 for that one as a starting bid. No one wanted it, alas.

hauntedpurse3

Here is that description:

As told to me by my mother, this purse was given to my great grandmother by Lizzie Borden.

My great grandmother immigrated from Italy via New York. So is this a simple outbreak of Lizzie haunting her accessories? Or perhaps, an epidemic of insanity among eBay sellers? A sucker is born every minute, said a banker named David Hannum (no, not PT Barnum!).

If one of my faithful readers actually purchases this “haunted” purse, please email me and let me know when you see the “crazed looking,” axe weilding matron of Maplecroft.

1893 Porter for Sale on eBay

Friday, January 19th, 2007

Someone is selling an original Porter on eBay. The starting bid is $500. Depending on condition, an original Porter can sell for $300 to $1500.

porter

The seller’s ad has a few inaccuracies, however.

THE LOT IS ONE BOOK. LIZZIE BORDEN TRIED TO BUY ALL THE COPIES OF THIS BOOK. MY ESTIMATE IS THAT LESS THAN FIFTY COPIES WERE CIRCULATED. THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY ESTIMATES TWENTY. THE AUTHOR EDWIN PORTER WAS THE POLICE REPORTER FOR THE FALL RIVER GLOBE. IT WAS PUBLISHED BY THE PRESS OF J D MUNROE OF FALL RIVER IN 1893. IT HAS 312 PAGES. IT IS IN FAIR CONDITION. THIS CONDITION IS ABOVE AVERAGE FOR THIS BOOK. IT WAS THE COPY OF DR RICHARDS – A FALL RIVER DOCTOR. NO RESERVE. LET ME LIST SOME OF THE PROBLEMS. THIS IS NOT A VERY HIGH QUALITY BINDING. THE BINDING IS LOOSE AT THE FRONT AND BACK. THE GOLD LETTERING IS FADED OR WORN. THE TOP AND BOTTOM OF THE SPINE IS WORN. THE CLOTH COVERING IS WEARING THIN. THE PAPER IS AGING AND TURNING BROWN. THIS IS THE ORIGINAL PRINTING. THERE IS A RECENT REPRINT AVAILABLE. I PRESUME THERE WAS NO DUST JACKET WHEN ISSUED. I DO NOT HAVE A DUST JACKET. THE NAME ‘RICHARDS’ IS WRITTEN IN PENCIL ON THE FIRST PAGE. THERE ARE NO TORN PAGES. I BELIEVE THE 1893 EDITION WAS ONLY PRINTED ONCE. THUS, I REFER TO THIS AS THE FIRST EDITION.

The part about fifty copies in circulation and the Fall River Historical Society saying there were less than twenty. Bunk. However, it is wonderful to see the honest and straightforward description of the condition of the book. Good work there. One must know what one is getting before investing so much money. Pity there are not a lot more photos. And I would like to know the state of the end papers.

Lizzie Portrait for Sale?

Monday, January 1st, 2007

zanesville

On eBay right now is a framed image of a woman for sale: Vintage Oval Convex Curved Bubble Glass Picture Frame.

Seems the interest was not going as well as the seller wanted so they added this note on December 29th: “Could this photo be of Lizzie Borden? I did a Google search and the similarity is amazing! Look on Google for yourself and decide.”

13 bids so far. Hmmm. Namedropping Lizzie Borden on eBay seems to have its advantages.

Is it Lizzie? Nope. But then the seller doesn’t say it is, do they?

Lizzie Borden Autograph?

Sunday, December 17th, 2006

A new eBay listing “Lizzie A. Borden Autograph Display 8×10 Rare Autograph Display!!” caught my eye. Starting bid: $400! Check it out!

A very rare signature of Lizzie A. Borden, professionally matted together with a black and white photograph to an overall size of 8 x 10 inches. In excellent condition .

Lizzie Borden was born on July 19, 1860.She is known as an american woman accused of killing her father and her step-mother. The elder Bordens were hacked to death with an ax on Aug. 4, 1892. Although Lizzie Borden claimed that she was out in the barn at the time, she was accused of the murders and tried. The trial, which aroused great public interest, ended with a verdict of not guilty. The case was never solved. She died on June 1, 1927.

The Autographs World is a proud new member of the European Division of the Universal Autograph Collector’s Club, we offer only authentic hand-signed autographs which are guaranteed for life and we guarantee the fastest possible delivery from Central Europe. We appreciate your support and look forward to serving you for many years to come!

Only problem is that this isn’t Lizzie’s photo and it isn’t Lizzie’s signature. Hmmm. Wonder if this is the first time she has been confused with the woman she was accused of murdering?
