1. GREETINGZ

Hello again! It has been a very busy month for Lizzie buffs. Not only was The Legend of Lizzie Borden on television some four times (Oxygen Network, cable TV), but a new image of one of the principal characters in the Borden murder mystery was revealed! The Lizzie Borden Virtual Museum and Library enjoyed a big bounce in hits and visits from the publicity. In fact, every time there has been a showing of this film or any of the documentaries on the case that infrequently appear on A&E or the History Channel, the web site benefits. Thank yous go to you too, for your patronage and support.

The Lizzie Borden Society Forum has marked a milestone. We signed up our 100th member just this week. If you have not been by in a while, come back and take a look at some of the creative and informative discussions. We welcome your input, so don' forget to add your two cents!

Here's a direct link to the forum

If you have any questions, comments, contributions, or suggestions, don't hesitate to contact me.

2. CONTEST — OCTOBER

Every month I will conduct a contest, the winner of which will receive a Lizzie-related gift item.

This month's first place wins a "Lizzie Borden: Did She or Didn't She" bumper sticker AND a copy of the newspaper reports of the Bertha Manchester murder case. You remember Bertha don't you? She was murdered by a hatchet-wielding killer while Lizzie was in jail. Great reading and never before published in this compiled format. The document is a PDF file, viewable on any computer system.

Second place wins a hatchet key chain. Third place wins a set of small pear candles.

October Contest: Caption This!

4. UPCOMING EVENTS - update

Last month I announced that Kathleen Carbone, a contributor to both the Lizzie Borden Society Forum and the Writers Corner of the Lizzie Borden Virtual Museum and Library, is presenting a program on Lizzie Borden for the Brighton Allston Historical Society at the Allston Public Library, outside Boston, on November 13. Anybody in the area at the time should consider attending this event! The program is titled Forty Whacks: Lizzie Borden Through The Looking Glass.

As an update, here is a link to the Brighton Allston Historical Society which offers details of the program.

5. LIZZIE IN THE NEWZ

The Fall River Historical Society published a first ever look at an aged Alice Russell in last month's newsletter to their subscribers. It is an amazing candid black and white image of Alice looking up at the camera as she sits on a rocking chair at the home for the aged in 1931. Here is a link to the image. If the link is broken or no image appears then it has expired.

The Lizzie Borden Virtual Museum and Library has teamed up with LawBuzz to provide important background information and reference support in the form of links to its essay on the Borden case. When you click on a hot link in their story, you are directed to an image or document on the LBVML. Pretty neat huh? Here is a link to LawBuzz.

The Lizzie Borden Virtual Museum and Library is assisting an independent filmmaker in his research of the Borden case. The plot is hush-hush, but as soon as he gives me the go-ahead to share the details, you will be among the first to hear about it. Stay tuned.

Sort of Lizzie in the newz. Victor Mascaro offers this: "I have just read and signed the online petition: 'Bewitched Complete Eight Seasons on DVD' Hosted on the web by PetitionOnline.com, the free online petition service. I personally agree with what this petition says, and I think you might agree, too. If you can spare a moment, please take a look, and consider signing yourself."

Thanks Victor, I think I will.

5. WEB SITE ADDITIONS

I have recently added several new pages to the Lizzie Borden Virtual Museum and Library. They include:

  • 1 new chapter to "This is Maplecroft" by Kathleen Carbone
  • a new segment of "I Love Lizzie" by Kathleen Carbone, entitled "Judge Dewey"
  • a new page of Lizzie Art (please make contributions to this collection!)
  • An interview with actress/playwright Marjorie Conn, on her one-woman show of Lizzie Borden which she performs nationally.
  • An interview with Victor Mascaro, the web master of the site on Elizabeth Montgomery. (as of the printing of this newzletter, this interview is not online. but it will be by October 5)
  • Past issues of the Lizzie Borden Newzletter are now archived on the LBVML. Simply click on the link on the first page of the web site and you will be directed to a page that offers info on subscribing and past issues. The current issue of the Lizzie Borden Newzletter is not archived until the next issue is published. You, as subscribers, are the only ones who have access to its contents.

7. WEB SITE COMING ATTRACTIONS

  • The Lizzie Borden Virtual Museum and Library is pleased to announce that later this month, in a few days actually, we will publish an interview I conducted recently with Evan Hunter (aka Ed McBain). Mr. Hunter offers some fascinating insight into the case and his writing of Lizzie. Don't miss this one!
  • A section of book and video reviews. If you would like to have your comments posted in this section, please email me
  • The web site will host the archives (6 months old and older) of the Lizzie Borden Society Forum. All topics on the Forum, with the exception of Lizzie's Privy (which is private and a member's only section) will be transferred to the web site starting next week. If you would like access to Lizzie's Privy on the Forum, simply sign up for membership at this address.
  • New photos of the inside of 92 Second Street — new views not on the web site — by Joe Carlson. Plus, if I can talk him into it, a first person account of his experiences during the visit.

8. CALLING ALL GHOST HUNTERS!

I would like to add a paranormal section to the Lizzie Borden Virtual Museum and Library, but the only thing is, I did not have an encounter with a ghost during my visit at the Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast. I hear tell lots of people have had such strange experiences.

If any of you would like to share your out-of-this-world Lizzie Borden stories, please email me and I will add them to the new addition to the site. My hope is to have that new portion up and running by October 20 or so — just in time for Halloween!

11. THIZ AND THATZ — Lizzie Borden: Miss Misinformation

I am not out to bash anybody's web site, but there are a passel of sites related to this case that contain a mountain of misinformation, misstatements, false facts, gossip, and innuendo. I will leave my comments at that and provide for you here a rogues gallery of sorts. Enjoy. Maybe I will have next month's contest related to one of these sites.

That is quite enough for now!

12. THIZ AND THATZ — Lizzie Borden: Cool and Wonderful

  • Harry Widdows discovered the coolest of the cool in Lizzie Borden sites! He found a site that offers handwriting samples of various famous and infamous people from history. Well, there is our Lizzie. But this particular handwriting sample has not been seen before now and is really quite a significant find. It is Lizzie Borden's burial instructions, written in her own hand! Check it out here.
  • Want to listen to a recording of "On the Old Fall River Line"? Thank Harry once again, because he found this for all of us to enjoy! (x-shockwave-flash is required to listen to the song.
  • And lastly, Harry also found this: a four and a half minute talk on the Lizzie Borden B&B.
